In episode 1, Farnum was aware of Wild Bill's reputation as he sought lodgings in the Grand Central Hotel. Hickok was not amused at the hotel owners attempt at humor.

Al Swearengen had enlisted Tom Mason to kill Hickok, who had recently gunned down Tom's brother Ned. In episode 2 Wild Bill sensed danger and shot Tom as he approached his table, even before Tom had touched his pistol.
