Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many teams did not claim the Detour clue before attempting to check into the Pit Stop in Leg 1 (in Uruguay)?

Answer: Two

Being told to find the 'blue and white hotel' on the Atlantic coastline in Punta Del Este, teams came off one task with the knowledge that their next route marker could be found across the road from their destination. Despite this, both Chip and Kim and Kami and Karli failed to locate their Detour clue and ended up inadvertently completed the 'Chips' Detour task of the Leg. Arriving a the Pit Stop, both teams were asked to retrieve their clue and check back in once more. Neither team was eliminated. In this leg, teams chose between 'Zips' and 'Chips'.

In 'Zips', teams needed to cross two lengthy ziplines, one across the roofs of the hotel and one into the hotel swimming pool. In 'Chips', teams needed to play roulette until they landed on their properly chosen number (with a max of five bets per round). Once they ran out of chips, they would need to complete 'Zips' anyways. None of the teams completing 'Chips' had to switch to the other task. Five teams completed 'Chips'.
2. Only two teams completed the 'Perro' Detour task in Leg 2 (in Argentina). Which team completed the task?

Answer: Bob and Joyce

Arriving at Evita Peron's grave in Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina, teams were given the second Detour task, a choice between 'Perro' and 'Tango'. In 'Perro', teams needed to take on eight dogs and walk them from the entrance of the cemetery, past three checkpoints, and to a statue known as La Fleur a mile away. Only Kami and Karli and Bob and Joyce completed this task.

The remaining teams completed 'Tango' in which they needed to go to a tango theater one and a half miles away, pick up a program, and match it to the correct dancer on-stage to claim their clue.

After this Detour, teams headed seventy miles out of the city for a Road Block task.
3. In Leg 4, teams flew to Russia and discovered their detour task aboard the Battleship Aurora in Saint Petersburg. In the 'Drink 1 Shot' task, what Russian beverage did team members need to drink?

Answer: Vodka

For this Detour, teams needed to either 'Drink 1 Shot' or 'Block 5 Shots'. The former involved teams traveling a short distance to Archikov Palace to complete a Cossack ritual in which they needed to balance a shotglass of vodka on a saber and down it without dropping the glass. 'Block 5 Shots' on the other hand took teams to a local hockey rink where they needed to block five shots from professional players in one net.

While Charla and Mirna, Brandon and Nicole, and Bob and Joyce completed the 'Block 5 Shots' task, the rest of the teams completed 'Drink 1 Shot'.

After this, the teams made their way to the Bronze Horseman statue.
4. In Leg 5, only one team made if to the 'Hump & Ride' Detour task before it closed. Which team was it?

Answer: Charla and Mirna

Charla and Mirna arrived just before the Detour was packing up and they were able to complete the 'Hump & Ride' choice (securing their place in the race). Unfortunately, many of the rest of the teams (excluding Fast Forward-toting Colin and Christie) had to complete 'Rock & Roll', a task which involved their transporting a 600 pound rock across a football field-sized expanse using an Egyptian system of wedges and blocks.

This physically demanding Detour was finished by five other teams. After the Detour, teams headed to the Pit Stop: The Sphinx.
5. Leg 7 took teams to Tanzania. How many teams completed 'Buzzing' over 'Busy' for the Detour?

Answer: None

The six teams remaining in the race all headed across Tanzania and picked the 'Busy' Detour task in the town of Mto wa Mbu. In 'Busy', teams needed to pick a cart and deliver two chairs to a location within the small, African town. 'Buzzing' would have required that teams visit a local honey farm to harvest two kilograms of honey from beehives in an apiary.

After the Detour task, teams made their way to the town of Kibaoni for an appetizing Road Block.
6. In Leg 8, teams received a Detour choice between 'Off Plane' and 'Off Road'. Where did the Detour end?

Answer: In the desert

Heading to the United Arab Emirates, teams received their Detour clue heading out from the Bur Dubai Abra Port and had to choose between 'Off Plane' and 'Off Road'. In 'Off Plane', teams could opt to jump, one-at-a-time, out of a plane in a tandem skydive. Only one team could take the plane at a time, so a line would result in a wait. Nonetheless, they would land at the clue box.

In 'Off Road', teams hopped into 4-by-4 cars and drove through Margham Dunes to the same clue box. While possibly slower, teams who navigated well through the deep dunes (without getting stuck) would be fine. Brandon and Nicole and Kami and Karli completed the former of these tasks.
7. In Leg 9 in India, all participating teams completed the 'Heavy But Short' task.

Answer: True

Heading to Kolkata, India in Leg 9, the remaining five teams were instructed to choose between 'Heavy But Short' and 'Light But Long'. In 'Light But Long', teams would've had to head to Kolkata's largest flower market to find a marked stall, purchase a garland, and send it down the river Ganges to get their clue.

Instead, teams finished 'Heavy But Short' in which they needed to head to an easier-to-find location to carry an engine-less car to a nearby garage (half-a-mile away). With the assistance of locals, this was an easier selection.

After this, teams headed to the Pit Stop at Victoria Memorial.
8. In Leg 10 in New Zealand, teams could choose between 'Clean' and what other Detour choice?

Answer: Dirty

Leg 10 flew teams to Rotorua, New Zealand where they needed to find their Detour task outside Rotorua Museum. In 'Clean', Colin and Christie, Chip and Kim, and Linda and Karen all headed to Okere Falls to perform a river sledging task along a mile-long river course.

In 'Dirty', Brandon and Nicole and Kami and Karli went to the 'Hell's Gate' geothermal area to search in hot mud pits for their next clues. After the Detour, teams could head onwards to their Road Block clues at Matapara Farms.
9. In Leg 11 in the Philippines, which Detour task was completed by more teams?

Answer: Plow

In 'Plow', teams needed to choose a marked area and use an ox to plow their way through the mud. Once the plow caught on a buried rope, they would receive their next clue attached to the line. In 'Fowl', teams would need to herd one thousand ducks from one end of a pond to another, fifty yards away. Linda and Karen, Brandon and Nicole, Chip and Kim, and Colin and Christie all chose to complete the 'Plow' Detour (during which Colin got very angry) while no one completed 'Fowl'. Following the Detour, teams returned to Manila to reach the Pit Stop, Coconut Palace.
10. The final Detour task of the race took teams to Canada. What Olympic sport did all three teams participate in?

Answer: Luge

In Leg 13, teams found their Detour clue at Calgary's Olympic Park. Here, a choice needed to be made between 'Slide' or 'Ride'. In 'Slide', completed by all three remaining teams, both members needed to hop into a luge and perform the track in under thirty-four seconds to receive their next clue. 'Ride' may have been more difficult (as shown in Brandon and Nicole's attempts).

In 'Ride', teams needed to ride a slalom skiing course on mountain bikes in less than three minutes. After the Detour, teams were instructed to head to their final destination city: Dallas.
