Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Peter Tuddenham had three roles in 'Doctor Who': Voices ('The Ark in Space'), Titan Voice ('The Masque of Mandragora') and Special Voice ('Time and the Rani'). Which of the following roles did he play in 'Blake's 7'?

Answer: All of these

As in 'Doctor Who', Peter Tuddenham's roles in 'Blake's 7' were all voice roles. He played the computer characters Zen, Orac and Slave throughout the series, except for Orac's first episode ('Orac'), in which the character was voiced by Derek Farr.
2. The creator of 'Blake's 7' also created several alien races in 'Doctor Who'. With Blake-like humanism, he once wrote, "Machines can make laws but they cannot preserve justice. Only human beings can do that." Which of the following 'Doctor Who' creatures did he NOT create?

Answer: The Jaggaroth ('City of Death')

Terry Nation was this prolific writer. The quoted line was from 'The Keys of Marinus', and was spoken by the Doctor in reference to the Conscience of Marinus machine, but it could easily have referred to the Kraals' androids or to the Daleks. 'City of Death' was written by Douglas Adams and Graham Williams, under the pseudonym David Agnew, and had little to do with machines.
3. A Cygnus Alpha priestess; the voice of a mad computer tended by the Tesh; a sandminer pilot; and a 20th century physicist from Cambridge were all played by this actor in different episodes of 'Doctor Who' or 'Blake's 7'. In which of the following 'Doctor Who' stories did she perform one of these roles?

Answer: Remembrance of the Daleks

Pamela Salem played Cambridge physicist Dr Rachel Jensen in this classic season 25 story. She also played one of the voices of Xoanon (mad computer) in 'The Face of Evil', Toos (sandminer pilot) in 'The Robots of Death', and Kara in the 'Blake's 7' episode, 'Cygnus Alpha'.
4. This actor was a baddie in both 'Doctor Who' and 'Blake's 7'. In one of them, she played the long-frocked, born-to-rule Chessene of the Franzine Grig. But she is better known for which role in the other?

Answer: Servalan

These two roles were very similar - power hungry and calculating, yet still subject to the desires of the flesh (human flesh, specifically - Chessene liked to eat it and Servalan liked to...well, I'm sure you remember). No disrespect to actor Jacqueline Pearce, but it's pretty hard to think of Chessene as anything other than a Who-universe Servalan.
5. His BBC sci-fi roles were, in chronological order, (1) UNIT's Captain Hawkins, fighting against the Silurians, (2) a criminal once convicted by the Federation, and (3) the powerful Maylin Tekker in charge of the Timelash. None of these characters was idealistic, two of them were goodies, and two were self-serving schemers. What character did this actor play in 'Blake's 7'?

Answer: Avon

Paul Darrow is most famous for playing Avon, the cynical, somewhat unwilling opponent of the Federation who believes that wealth is the only reality. Avon, despite being a goodie, had more in common with the evil baddie Tekker than the servile soldier Hawkins.
6. "The guards are armed!" was the subversive thief Goudry's excuse for not helping to rescue the Doctor in 'The Sun Makers'. As a result he was branded a coward, setting the tone for the actor's next television role, which lasted four years. Which character in 'Blake's 7' did he play?

Answer: Vila

Michael Keating played Goudry in 1977, and then Vila from 1978-81. He was the only actor to be in every episode of 'Blake's 7'.
7. All of the following actors appeared in both 'Blake's 7' and the 'Doctor Who' story 'The Robots of Death' (the characters they played in B7/Robots respectively are in brackets after their names). However, only three of them were in season 1 of 'Blake's 7' - who is the exception?

Answer: Brian Croucher (Travis/Borg)

Brian Croucher was the only one of these actors to have a continuing role in 'Blake's 7', when he took over from Stephen Greif as Space Commander Travis in season 2. David Bailie played the rebel Chevner in 'Project Avalon'. Miles Fothergill played Novara in 'The Web', and although we never see his face as SV7 in 'Robots', his voice is unmistakeable.
8. Jeremy Wilkin played the scientist Kellman in the 'Doctor Who' story, 'Revenge of the Cybermen'. He also played Dev Tarrant in the first episode of 'Blake's 7'. What do these two characters have in common?

Answer: They are both double agents

Kellman at first appears to be working for the Cybermen, but is later revealed to be working for their enemy, the Vogans. Dev Tarrant is first seen at the resistance meeting Blake attends, but later betrays resistance members, including Blake and his lawyer.

The name Dev Tarrant is surprisingly close to Del Tarrant, the continuing character who first appears in season 3 of 'Blake's 7', although the relationship (if any) between the two characters, who never meet and are separated by two seasons, remains a mystery.
9. 'Blake's 7' script editor and writer Chris Boucher also wrote three 'Doctor Who' stories, in his typically witty writing style. Which of the following stories did he NOT write? (quotes in brackets from the BBC website)

Answer: 'The Talons of Weng Chiang' (Doctor: 'Eureka' is Greek for 'this bath is too hot'.)

'The Talons of Weng Chiang' was written by Robert Holmes, from an idea by Robert Banks Stewart. These writers were responsible for several other clever 'Doctor Who' scripts, such as 'The Caves of Androzani' (Holmes) and 'The Seeds of Doom' (Banks Stewart), and Holmes also wrote four episodes of 'Blake's 7', including the wonderful 'Gambit'.
10. Only two of the actors who played the Doctor appeared in 'Blake's 7'. One was Richard Hurndall, who stepped into the deceased William Hartnell's shoes in 'The Five Doctors'. Who was the other?

Answer: Colin Baker

Colin Baker's role was as Bayban in season 3 of 'Blake's 7'. Richard Hurndall played Nebrox in season 4. Peter Davison appeared in that other British sci-fi series, 'The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy', as the Dish of the Day at Milliways.
