Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which major motion picture studio was involved in the production of "Emergency!"?

Answer: Universal

Jack Webb's production company, Mark VII Limited, worked with Universal on several hit series, including "Emergency!", "Adam-12" and "Dragnet". Universal is very well known for other TV shows as well, including "The A Team", "Coach" and "Magnum, P.I."
2. Station 51, where "Emergency!" was set, was part of the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

Answer: False

The Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Los Angeles City Fire Department are two different entities. The city department was founded in 1886, while the county department, which serves unincorporated areas and those cities without their own fire departments, was formed in 1920. "Emergency!" wasn't the first TV series to focus on Los Angeles County firefighters.

The syndicated "Rescue 8", starring Jim Davis and Lang Jeffries, ran from 1958 to 1959.
3. At least three different people in the cast of "Emergency!" actually worked for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Which of the following people did NOT work for the fire department in real life?

Answer: Marco Lopez

A versatile actor whose resume includes appearances on shows like "Adam-12", "Mannix", and "Murder, She Wrote", Marco Lopez ended up playing a character of the same name on "Emergency!" Mike Stoker was the firefighter/engineer who drove the fire truck for Station 51, and eventually retired from the force at the rank of Captain. Sam Lanier, who worked as a dispatcher for Los Angeles County, provided the dispatcher's voice for Station 51's runs. And Dick Hammer portrayed Station 51's captain during part of the first season.
4. In "Hang-Up", the eleventh episode from the first season, fireman/paramedic John Gage (Randolph Mantooth) tries desperately to find out how an episode of what television series, also popular at the time, ended?

Answer: "Adam-12"

Originally broadcast April 8, 1972, "Hang-Up" is infamous because the Station 51 crew is watching what's supposed to be a fictional Los Angeles police unit. Gage and DeSoto actually do cross paths with officers Reed and Malloy (played by Kent McCord and Martin Milner) during one of their runs to Rampart Hospital.
5. In "Zero", the tenth episode of the third season, John and his partner, Roy DeSoto (Kevin Tighe) are interviewed on a local TV news show. Which well-known sportscaster conducts this interview?

Answer: Dick Enberg

Originally airing on November 24, 1973, "Zero" featured guest appearances by JoAnne Worley (as a woman who screams for therapeutic reasons) and Mariette Hartley (as an abusive mother). On two separate occasions in this episode, John locks up in front of the camera--with Dick Enberg and with a second reporter on the scene of a fire--and Roy has to bail him out.
6. After six seasons and several made-for-TV movies, how do John and Roy wind up ending their careers as paramedics?

Answer: They get promoted to Captain

Originally airing on December 31, 1978, the retrospective movie "Greatest Rescues of Emergency" brings about a fitting ending to the series. As promotion precluded both Gage and DeSoto from continuing as paramedics, they ended up leaving behind a profession that inspired many people in real life. Ironically, DeSoto had previously passed up promotion to Engineer, which would have also taken him away from the paramedics corps, in the Season 3 episode "Promotion" (originally aired November 3, 1973).
7. In "Kids", the second episode of the second season, Station 51 adopts a stray dog as their mascot. What name do the men give their new mascot?

Answer: Boot

The name Boot pays homage to rookie firemen, who are known as "boots". He is a faithful, if somewhat aggravating, mascot for the station. "Kids" originally aired September 23, 1972.
8. In real life, the facility that portrayed Rampart General Hospital, where Squad 51's patients were taken, is affiliated with which major institution?

Answer: University of California, Los Angeles

Established as Harbor General Hospital in 1946, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors authorized renaming the hospital Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1978. The facility is located in the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance.
9. From 1973 to 1976, NBC showed an animated spin off of "Emergency!" on Saturday mornings. What was the name of this spin off?

Answer: "Emergency +4"

Featuring the voices and likenesses of Randolph Mantooth and Kevin Tighe, "Emergency +4" chronicled the exploits of Station 51's vaunted paramedics, as well as the four young people who accompanied them on their various rescues. The show actually ran for two seasons, with the third season consisting entirely of reruns.
10. During the production run of "Emergency!", there was no Station 51 in Los Angeles County.

Answer: True

Los Angeles County Fire Station 127, which is located in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson, near Interstate 405, was used to portray the celebrated Station 51. In a number of episodes, Truck 127, one of the units assigned to the station, was called out on Station 51's fictional runs.

It wasn't until 1995 that the county finally got a Station 51. Station 60, which serves Universal Studios, was renamed to recognize "Emergency!" and its contributions.
