There was a lot about Kagato that changed between Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe. Not only did his eyes change, but the cut and color of his hair changed as well (it's still curly and back in a ponytail, but the bangs are cut differently). Also, if you pay attention, Kagato's outfit in Tenchi Universe has the same colors as the one in the OVA, but they were in reversed position (i.e. the seams were black and the main fabric was purple).

It's kind of funny, 'cause you see all these pictures of Kagato without a cape from "Tenchi Universe," but he never takes off the goofy thing in the OVA! You'd think it would get on the way when he's trying to fight... Anyway, the color and style of the cape for both versions of Kagato are very similar.
