Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The competition started with thirty competitors, but how many people ended up starting with white aprons?

Answer: Twenty-two

In the very beginning of the competition, after the auditions, thirty competitors were brought to the MasterChef kitchen to get themselves into the game by winning the coveted white apron. Initially, seventeen participants were given their aprons while nine were told to cook a second dish, this time with commonplace ingredients and while avoiding gimmicks. Of those nine, only five received aprons.

The three not involved in these numbers were actually sent home during the first hour, mainly by using shoddy techniques as observed by the judges early on.
2. The team challenge in which the chefs had to cook for the largest amount of people was actually the very first team challenge. For whom were the chefs cooking?

Answer: Soldiers

In the largest team challenge to date, two teams of ten people each were brought into the desert to serve for five hundred U.S. soldiers-in-training, barbecuing out in the sun and gauging their own teammates in a team setting for the first time. With only a couple of hours to prep, the teams ended up serving vastly-different dishes-- one making pork chops and coleslaw with the other making BBQ chicken and potato salad.

The former won the challenge by nearly a 2:1 ratio, leading their opponents into the first-ever Pressure Test. Each subsequent team challenge served significantly less people.
3. Which competitor produced a dish for the judges that they did not cook, disqualifying themselves?

Answer: Tyler

In one of the earlier Elimination Challenges, the home cooks were required to recreate a dish originally made by either "Masterchef" season 4 winner Luca or "Masterchef Junior" season 1 winner Alexander. The dishes they would make were actually chosen by Elizabeth, winner of the previous Mystery Box, and she was required to divvy her competitors out to make either a pancetta-wrapped veal with radicchio and apples or a passion fruit panna cotta with berry coulis and hazelnuts. During the later moments of the competition, Tyler accidentally pulled Jaimee's panna cotta from the blast chiller, serving it and leaving her with a bad dish.

The move ended up disqualifying him from the game (a first in the show's five seasons) and sparing the rest from elimination.
4. Which of these was not made during a Pressure Test this season?

Answer: Chocolate souffle

This season, the Pressure Tests were just as difficult as ever forcing the competitors to engage in extremely stressful challenges throughout. Over the course of ten Pressure Tests from start to finish, some of the items teams needed to create included blueberry pie, steak frites, spring rolls, chocolate truffles, red velvet cake, a one-hour prawn trio (ceviche, prawn tempura, and stuffed prawns), a trio of technical egg dishes (poached egg, egg yolk ravioli, and cheese souffle), and a trio of American desserts (key lime pie, Boston cream pie, and New York-style cheesecake).
5. The winner of every single Mystery Box Challenge this season was granted immunity for the subsequent Elimination Challenge.

Answer: True

For their ingenuity and creativity, winners of each Mystery Box Challenge were granted with immunity and game-changing advantages going into the following challenge. This, of course, would omit them from being considered as a leader for the following Team Challenge.

This season, competitors were given the typical Mystery Box containing wonderful proteins and fresh ingredients. In addition, teams also faced more difficult boxes in which they fought with nothing but unlabeled cans or prepared single ingredients with higher risk (like Alaskan king salmon).
6. On how many different occasions did the home cooks participate in two-person relays this season?

Answer: One

While there were four different challenges in which the participating chefs needed to work in teams of two, only one involved the relay element seen frequently in previous seasons (in which team members took turns preparing complex dishes, one spending ten minutes, alone, before handing off to the second took over).

In the third team challenge, duos created surf and turf dishes together, in the seventh they paired up to make chicken dishes, and in the ninth they made dishes with regional American ingredients.

The sixth elimination test, however, involved participating in a relay making five dim sum dishes.
7. In one of the season's later Pressure Tests, the competitors needed to make what large pastry dish?

Answer: Croquembouche

In the eighth Pressure Test, three of the final six home cooks were required to complete one of the most extravagant desserts in the show's history-- the croquembouche. This dish, involving profiteroles stacked in a tower and held together with caramel, ended up proving complicated, especially for seasoned baker Jaimee who ended up getting eliminated on the back of her dish.
8. Which competitor faced off in a record-breaking six Pressure Tests, surviving each?

Answer: Leslie

Leslie, who started out in the competition with hasty dishes and a bit of an antagonistic nature, ended up failing in most of the early Team Challenges throughout the game and, by the end, ended up competing in seven out of ten Pressure Tests, succeeding (sometimes as the only victor) in six of them. Making it to the final three, Leslie ended up losing in a triple-baking task. Cutter, who placed fourth, also met this record during this season, losing in his final Pressure Test to Leslie.
9. Which participant was the only one in the competition not to face off in a single Pressure Test?

Answer: Elizabeth

In a "Masterchef" first, one contestant-- Elizabeth-- ended up maintaining a winning streak throughout virtually the entire season by avoiding the bottom two or three in every challenge. In the show, she never once lost a Team Challenge, leader or not, and as such she never needed to participate in a Pressure Test.

The only chance of elimination Elizabeth faced was in the final cook-off in the last episode.
10. Which home cook became the winner of "MasterChef" season five?

Answer: Courtney

In the finale, Courtney faced off against Elizabeth to impress the judges one last time, and like in previous seasons, they were required to make an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert to determine their fate. Elizabeth made grilled octopus with chickpea and chorizo salad, spiced rack of lamb with red quinoa and carrot purée, and grapefruit semolina cake with poached plums and ground pistachio. Courtney made crispy pig's ear with dandelion and fennel salad, sumac duck breast with spring vegetables and farro, and cherry meringue with salted chocolate and almonds. Courtney was inevitably crowned the winner, taking with her the MasterChef trophy, the $250,000, and a cookbook deal.
