Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first scene we see with Ben is when he is coming into the courthouse and a group of reporters are asking questions. Ben says that he won't reveal his strategy because he's up against...

Answer: "the toughest, wildest, most ruthless prosecuter."

Then the scene cut to an image of Julie questioning a witness.
2. During the first scene in the courtroom we see Ben questioning a witness. During the questioning, Julie makes several objections. What was the first one?

Answer: "The chair is not on trial."

Her second was that the chair wasn't in the witness stand. "But if it were, I'm sure Mr. Matlock would be piercing in his examination." Ben got very upset because she wouldn't let him finish a thought before objecting. For those who have seen the episode with Julie's ex-husband, it seems that Julie acts the same way as her ex does when making objections.
3. After the trial was in recess, Ben went over to Julie because he was mad at the way she kept objecting to his line of questioning. What did he call her objections?

Answer: unreasonable and meddlesome

Julie just gave him a look like she didn't know what he was talking about. To that, he replied "Don't give me that innocent look."
4. After Ben yelled at Julie for objecting so much and told her what he thought of her objections, how did she reply?

Answer: "High praise, and before lunch."

She then went on to say that she did all those objections for his own good - the jury was falling asleep and the only suspense in the trial was when Ben would get his client to plea bargain.
5. Ben and Julie are called into the judge's chambers. What did Ben say right after the judge mentioned jury tampering?

Answer: "I know Miss March is new to Atlanta, but I'll vouch for her integrity."

Juror number 7, Harry Craven, accused Ben of giving him money in exchange for voting (and getting others to vote) for the defendant. Harry Craven was a mailman.
6. Who wanted the President of the union (better known as the defendant) to fire Ben and get a new lawyer?

Answer: Vice President of the union

The Vice President, named Linford, wanted someone else to be his lawyer... and had a reason which Ben and Julie figured out later. Linford claimed it was because people would assume the union had done the jury tampering and wanted to distance the union from Ben.
7. How much was the bribe that Ben was accused of giving?

Answer: $50,000

Harry Craven was in the judge's chambers with Ben and Julie when he showed them the envelope which had "Matlock and Matlock Law Offices" written on it. How the envelope came into possession of the guy who did the bribing was never really explained, but because Matlock was defending the President and the Vice President was doing the bribing, it could have come into his possession at that point.
8. Charlene comes in for a brief scene. Where had she flown back from?

Answer: Miami

She had a case going out there and flew back as soon as she heard that her dad needed a lawyer. But then Julie came in and offered her services.
9. Julie came into Ben's office to announce that she had gotten _______ to defend him.

Answer: "one of the best legal minds in the whole south"

Julie had taken a leave of absence from the DA's office.
10. When Julie proclaims that she will defend Ben, she quotes something he says in such cases. What did she say?

Answer: "You've got yourself a mouthpiece."

Charlene got mad at this because she had flown from Miami in order to defend her father. Ben goes out to talk to her saying that maybe this wasn't her case. He was afraid that if she lost, it'd really hurt her. So he told her to go back to Miami. Charlene said she'd call him every day. Ben replied "maybe twice."
11. Yes or no: Did Ben think his client was guilty?

Answer: No

One of the first things Julie did after taking Ben's case was to ask if he really thought his client did the murder he was accused of.
12. Ben tells Julie that "you are probably the best prosecuter at the DA's office." What was her reply?

Answer: "One of the best."

Julie March was on the show for years and still nothing really happened between her and Ben. Although in an episode form the last season, Julie does come to town and wants to know where she stands with Ben, relationship-wise.
13. Ben begins to ask questions about Julie's leave of absence while sitting outside drinking coffee. What does she finally say, during this conversation, that she did in order to allow her to take his case?

Answer: It was actually accumulated vacation time.

Ben was worried that this case was a conflict of interest for her. She finally gets around his questions by saying it wasn't exactly a leave of absence, but accumulated vacaiton time. Ben starts to ask her again how that could be, but she shuts him up by telling him to drink his coffee as it was getting cold.
14. Tyler 'stalks' the juror who accused Ben of bribing him. What does Tyler say about Ben when he first confronts Harry Craven at his house?

Answer: "Not only am I in the employ of Ben Matlock, I am his friend."

Tyler then goes on to say that he will follow Harry everywhere.
15. Ben and Julie go to the jail to ask Ben's client, Mr. O'Hara, a few questions in order to try and find out who accused Ben of jury tampering and why. Mr. O'Hara decides to talk, but wants Julie out of the room. How does Julie respond?

Answer: "Possibly Mr. O'Hara has done something illegal."

And Mr. O'Hara had done something wrong. He took money under the table in exchange for allowing a monopoly of snack carts at construction sites.
