quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "My name is Matt Foley, and I am a motivational speaker. I am ___, ___, and ___."

Answer: 35, thrice divorced, and I live in a van down by the river

In the first "Matt Foley" sketch, which aired in 1992, Matt only specified that he was divorced. His tale of woe would grow as time went on.
2. "Now, you kids are probably saying to yourself, 'Now, I'm gonna go out, and I'm gonna get the world by the tail, and wrap it around and put it in my pocket!' Well, I'm here to tell you that you're probably gonna find out, as you go out there, that you're not gonna amount to ________."

Answer: jack squat

This passage, from Matt Foley's unveiling to the world, was given in hopes of dicouraging two youngsters (played by David Spade and Christina Applegate) from smoking marijuana.
3. Matt: "Now, young man, what do you want to do with your life?" Brian (played by David Spade): "I.. actually, Matt, I kinda wanna be a writer." Matt: "Well, ________!"

Answer: La de frickin' da!

Brian's father (played by Phil Hartman) defends his boy, saying that they had been encouraging Brian's writing. Matt advises that the pater familias shut his yapper!
4. "Now, you kids are probably asking yourself, 'Hey, Matt, how can we get back on the right track?' Well, as I see it, there is only one solution! And that is_________!"

Answer: for me to get my gear, move it on into here, 'cause I'm gonna bunk with you, buddy!

Again, this is part of Matt's diatribe to the characters played by Spade and Applegate. Rather than motivate them, Matt terrifies the two into renouncing pot rather than have to live with this crazed Zig Ziglar parody.
5. "Once, there was a boy who liked to throw things. He started out throwing eggs. Then, he threw the big game. Then, he threw back a shot of whiskey. Then he threw up. Then he got thrown out of the house, and then..."

Answer: he moved into a VAN down by the river!

In this Halloween sketch, Matt is trying to convince some boys that throwing eggs on Halloween is a bad thing. He ends up stamping out a flaming bag of dog poo and falling through the front window.
6. (After getting on an exercycle) "Okay! Now you'll often find that when mounting on the apparatus,___________!"

Answer: you'll split your shorts

In this sketch where Matt "assists" Tim Meadows as a fitness instructor, he continues (after splitting his pants): "It's a common occurance. Stay motivated, do not let it get ya. Because, as long as you're wearing an athletic supporter, everything's gonna be okie-dokie! However, since I've forgotten MINE it's kind of a moot point!"
7. (Matt is playing Santa Claus in a Christmas sketch): "'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the ___; Your ol' buddy Matt fell asleep _______."

Answer: van; on the can

This poem, a take-off on Clement Clark Moore's "A Visit from Saint Nicholas", continues:

"His children were nestled two time zones away,
With his first wife and her husband, in sunny L.A.
Then Matt woke up and realized with a quiver
That he still lived in a van down by the river!"
8. (Matt is in prison for nonpayment of alimony) "You're left with nothing but a cot, a sink, a toilet, and _______________."

Answer: a homemade tattoo of a van down by the river

In this sketch, Chris Farley and guest host Martin Lawrence play prison inmates trying to scare some delinquents "straight". Their diatribe breaks down when they cannot agree which of them is the dominant partner and which is the proverbial...well, use your imagination. (Suffice to say that Lawrence was banned from the show for his harsh language in this episode.)
9. (In his farewell to Phil Hartman during the 1993 season close): "So long.. farewell! Hey, what am I, chopped liver? I need... to sleep... In a _________________."

Answer: van down by the river

Hartman was leaving "Saturday Night Live" after eight years as "the glue"--the cast member who, by common consensus, held the show together. He would be tragically murdered by his wife in 1998.
10. Bonus question: Chris Farley took the name "Matt Foley" from an old friend of his. What was this friend's profession as of Farley's tragic death in 1997?

Answer: Priest

Ironically enough, the real Matt Foley delivered the homily at Farley's funeral. Foley also made national headlines in April, 2005 when he tackled a thief trying to steal from his church's collection box and held him in a headlock until the police came. "You cannot steal from God!" the real Foley was quoted as saying. (Man, what Farley could have done with that one.)

Rest in peace, big guy. You sure were funny.
