The first episode 'The Killings At Badger's Drift' had Jonathan Firth among its guest stars. Jonathan is the younger brother of British actor Colin Firth.
2. Elizabeth Spriggs and Richard Cant played which pair of murder victims in episode one?

Answer: Iris and Dennis Rainbird

Elizabeth Spriggs and Richard Cant appeared again in a later episode entitled 'Dead Letters' where they played relatives of the deceased Iris and Dennis Rainbird named Ursula and Alistair Gooding.
3. Which character was found to be the killer in episode one?

Answer: Catherine Lacey

The character of Catherine Lacey had, in fact, been responsible for four deaths as she had shot and killed Bella Trace on a hunting trip a couple of years previously. At the time Bella died, her death was attributed to an accident involving a stray shot.
4. In episode 2, 'Written In Blood', the victim, Gerald Hadleigh, had a secret which had been well kept until the day of his death, what was it?

Answer: He was a homosexual and a cross dresser

The very popular British actress Una Stubbs appeared in this episode and her performance was widely acclaimed. Joanna David, wife of Edward Fox and mother of Emilia Fox, was also one of the guest stars.
5. Both the victim and his killer were members of a group of fledgling writers who called themselves what?

Answer: The Midsomer Worthy Writers Circle

The various villages of Midsomer which are mentioned throughout the series are frequently the same area of the UK. The producers of the series change signs, filming locations and prominent buildings in order to make it appear as though each village is a different place.
6. The killer in 'Written in Blood' had a macabre secret of their own which came out just near the end of the episode. What was it?

Answer: They were hiding the embalmed body of their dead brother in a locked bedroom

The director, writers and producers of 'Written In Blood' have stated in interviews that they wanted to give a 'slapstick' air to the episode which is why they had insane people chasing each other with hideously large kitchen knives, creepy music and a house full of dark, mysterious rooms and hidden objects!
7. In episode 3, 'Death Of A Hollow Man', the two victims were Agnes Gray and her cousin, Esslyn. Where did Esslyn's murder take place?

Answer: On stage in a crowded theatre as he performed in a play

In the play 'Amadeus', Esslyn Carmichael was playing the role of Antonio Salieri, thought by many to be in some way responsible for the death of Wolfgang Mozart. Esslyn's death occurred while he was performing the scene where Salieri takes his own life.

The killer had swapped the stage prop knife for a real blade, which resulted in the actor cutting his own throat in front of a live audience.
8. Again referring to the episode 'Death of a Hollow Man',in what way was Joyce Barnaby, Tom's wife, connected to the second murder victim?

Answer: They were both acting in the stage production of 'Amadeus'

In the play, Joyce Barnaby was playing the role of Salieri's cook. It was a non-speaking role but she was still extremely nervous before opening night in case she made a mistake.
9. Barnaby and Troy's investigation uncovered the fact that the killer had once been a famous British stage actor.

Answer: False

The director of 'Amadeus', and the man who turned out to be the killer of Esslyn and Agnes, Harold Winstanley, often bored his cast and crew to death with stories of the famous actors he had directed throughout his career. His particular favourite was 'Sir John', most likely a reference to the great British thespian Sir John Gielgud.
10. Episode 4, 'Faithful Unto Death,' showed a man named Alan Hollingsworth in a spot of financial trouble which was made worse by the sudden kidnapping of his wife, Simone. Whom did Barnaby suspect was responsible for the crime?

Answer: Simone herself, along with a friend of hers

Roger Allam, who played Alan Hollingsworth, also starred in 'The Queen' (2006) alongside Dame Helen Mirren, in the role of Robin Janvrin, a member of Her Majesty's personal staff.
11. What was the special ingredient in Elfrida and Bunny's cooking that made Tom enjoy their cakes so much?

Answer: Marijuana

Bunny was famous for his little brown cakes, which he baked regularly. On a visit to Bunny and Elfrida's home, Tom had sampled several of these treats and had acted somewhat strangely for the rest of the day, much to the surprise of Gavin Troy!
12. Elfrida was the one who inadvertently uncovered Simone's deception concerning her supposed kidnapping.

Answer: True

Elfrida had once been a well known actress and remarked that she knew that Simone, who had supposedly been kidnapped was extremely good at stage make up. This comment was highly significant as she had told of bruises she had supposedly received at the hands of her husband, Alan.

When Simone was 'returned' by her 'kidnappers', covered it cuts and bruises, Tom had wiped one away cleanly, exposing her lies.
13. In episode 5, 'Death In Disguise', Tom and Sgt. Troy are called upon to investigate a supposedly accidental death at a commune. What was the name of the site of this commune?

Answer: The Lodge of the Golden Windhorse

'Midsomer Murders' first aired in March, 1998 in the United Kingdom. The series is based on the novels by Caroline Graham although several changes have been made in plot and characterization in many of the episodes.
14. Ian Craigie, the leader of the commune, had once been in prison after being convicted of a double murder as a young man.

Answer: False

Ian Craigie HAD been in prison several years before, and had openly acknowledged this to his former landlady, however, murder was not the crime for which he had been imprisoned.
15. Ian Craigie was stabbed to death in a split second, yet nobody near him appeared to have been the culprit. How did Barnaby deduce that Andrew Carter, Alias Christopher Wainright, who was nowhere near Craigie at the timr he was killed, was actually the murderer?

Answer: He had made telephone calls to check on the young man's background and found that he had once been an expert knife thrower in a circus

There was a certain irony to Andrew Carter's murder of Ian Craigie. The young man blamed 'The Master' for the death of his uncle and killed him to get revenge, however, after Craigie's death it was found that he was terminally ill with cancer and did not have long to live anyway.
