The children call her Mammy. Grandad calls her a witch. All her friends call her Agnes or Mrs Brown. The foul-mouthed matriarch of the Brown family has one important mission in life and that is to interfere in the welfare of her children. Four of her sons, and one daughter, have appeared on the BBC show.

These are Mark, Rory, Dermot, Trevor and Cathy. Mrs Brown is played brilliantly by the Irish actor and comedian, Brendan O'Carroll.

Answer: Nicholas 'Redser' Brown

Nicholas 'Redser' Brown died when his children were young, although it is uncertain when that was. His name has appeared sporadically during the series and more so during the 2013 episode "Mammy's Break". This is when Mrs Brown tried to talk to him through a psychic, who happened to be a fraud.

Answer: Dermot

Dermot Brown works for a promoter, dressing up in comical costumes to walk the street advertising different wares. These costumes have included a penguin, a squirrel, a giant turkey, and as Laurel of the Laurel and Hardy fame. Dermot is married to Maria and they have triplet sons named after the Beatles, John, George and Ringo. Dermot is played by Irish actor, Paddy Houlihan.

Answer: Rory

Rory Brown is a hairdresser and he got married to Dino Doyle in the 2013 episode "Mammy Swings". Mrs Brown was the last to find out her son was homosexual, despite family and friends giving several hints. She finally found out when Rory said "Mammy, I need to come out of the closet" to which Mrs Brown replied, "Wait till Buster finishes to go in first!". Rory is played by Rory Cowan.

Answer: Bono

Bono Brown is the young son of Mark Brown and his wife Betty and is very much loved by Mrs Brown. When he visited Mrs Brown once, he asked about granddad, and she explained that he was her husband's daddy, but that she calls him granddad. Because Bono loves Mrs Brown, he innocently replied that "he will call her granny, his daddy calls her mammy, and his mammy calls her an old cow!" Bono is played by Jamie O'Carroll, Brendan O'Carroll's grandson in real life.

Answer: Cathy

Cathy Brown is a divorcee still looking for the man of her dreams. She moved back to Dublin after the failure of her marriage and lives with Mrs Brown. She is always at loggerheads with her mother but there is a deep love between them regardless of what they both do or say. Cathy is trying for a child through a London fertility clinic.

She is played by Jennifer Gibney who is the wife of Brendan O'Carroll in real life.

Answer: Grandad

Grandad is in fact Mrs Brown's father-in-law, but she and the rest of the family call him Grandad. There is a deep seated animosity between father-in-law and daughter-in-law, he calling her a witch, and she always finding a chance to do nasty things to him.

This has included bashing him over the head several times with a metal tray to get him to sing, and using him as an ironing board to iron her clothes! He is played by Dermot O'Neill.

Answer: Winnie McGoogan

Winnie and her family are next door neighbours to the Brown family. Dim-witted but lovable Winnie is forever visiting Mrs Brown for a cup of tea, dressed in her pinafore and with curlers in her hair. Mrs Brown is very caustic, often saying things which go right over Winnie's head. Winnie is played by Eilish O'Carroll who is Brendan O'Carroll's sister in real life.

Answer: Buster Brady

Buster Brady is always bringing trouble to Mrs Brown's door, sweetly innocent, mischievous, and always trying to scam her every time they meet. He always wears the same clothes consisting of baseball hat, trainers and tracksuit jacket, often with the labels still attached making us believe he stole them. Buster is played by Danny O'Carroll who is Brendan O'Carroll's son in real life.

He is also father to Jamie O'Carroll (Bono) in real life.

Answer: Foley's Bar

Foley's Bar is owned by Mr Foley, although he does not have much of a speaking part during any episodes filmed. There is a middle-aged buxom blond lady who is seen serving the drinks and collecting the empties. Best friends and neighbours, Agnes Brown and Winnie McGoogan, are often seen in the bar, having a drink and chatting together. It is also the place where many family parties have taken place, such as the christening party of John, George and Ringo Brown.
