Physical Props Used in "The Office" (US) Quiz

The props used in "The Office" are one of the most entertaining aspects of the show. Some have even become products for sale. This quiz is about a few of my favorite moments and the props used in them. I hope it triggers good memories for you.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What substance does Jim put office supplies owned by Dwight and Andy into?

Answer: Jello

This is the best-running physical gag on the show, in my opinion. In "The Pilot" Jim puts Dwight's stapler into Jello. At the end of "The Pilot," Jim is shown returning Michael's "World's Best Boss" mug to his desk, encased in Jello. Among other uses of the Jello is the time when Jim moves to the Stamford branch and puts Andy Bernard's calculator in Jello, establishing that Andy will play the fool's role in that branch much like Dwight did in the Scranton branch.
2. Also in the first season, Amy Adams guest-stars in the "Hot Girl" episode. What product does Michael Scott allow her to sell from the conference room?

Answer: Purses

Michael allows Katy, played by Amy Adams, to use the branch's conference room to sell her purses. As you would guess, Michael immediately gets a crush on Katy and tries to impress her. One of the highlights of the episode is when Jim convinces Dwight that he should buy one of the purses for his own use, as a sort of briefcase-like male purse. In the end of course, Katy leaves with Jim, not Michael.
3. In season three's "Safety Training" episode, what piece of warehouse equipment was Darryl stressing the danger of, although Michael and Dwight wouldn't take the warnings seriously?

Answer: The baler

This is the episode where Darryl says: "The baler can flatten a car engine. It can cut off your arm and crush your entire body without skipping a beat," in an effort to keep the upstairs office employees away from it, especially Michael and Dwight. This is the episode in which the staff members have to talk Michael out of jumping from the building's roof onto a moon-bounce castle to show that depression from working in the office is as dangerous as working with the baler and other warehouse equipment.
4. In "Beach Games", what is Andy Bernard wearing when he floats away on the lake?

Answer: Sumo wrestling costume

The sumo wrestling costumes were used in the competitions that Michael set up during their lake outing to determine who he would select to take his place if he got the corporate job in New York. Andy was leaning over the water's edge, out of sight of everyone except Angela. He fell in and because he was still wearing the inflatable sumo costume he couldn't do anything but float away into the center of the lake. Angela pretended she couldn't understand that he was calling for help!
5. The "Fun Run" episode featured "Michael Scott's Dunder Mifflin Scranton Meredith Palmer Memorial Celebrity Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Fun Run Race For The Cure". Which of the following was NOT a prop used in that episode?

Answer: Bat-colored awareness ribbons

The giant check and the fee for Elizabeth the stripper to be the recipient of the check, dressed as a nurse, used over half of the $700 collected. The "Support the Rabid" wristband was actually produced and sold to the public. Yes, I bought one.
6. When the three staff of the Michael Scott Paper Company were using an office in the same building as Dunder Mifflin, Dwight tricked them into leaving their office. What did he put in the ceiling vent while they were gone?

Answer: A dead fish

It's the "Heavy Competition" episode, and Dwight tricks Michael by offering to meet him, Pam, and Ryan for lunch. Instead of going to the restaurant, however, Dwight sneaks into their office, puts a dead fish in the vent, and steals Michael's list of clients and information about them by taking his Rolodex. The dead fish begins to smell and although it takes Pam, Ryan, and Michael a long time to figure it out, eventually Pam and Ryan remove the fish.
7. In the episode "Customer Survey," what object gives Jim and Dwight a major clue as to why the reviews of the two of them by their customers are horribly negative?

Answer: Coffee cups with photos of each of the other employees on them

It turns out that Jim and Dwight both failed to go to an "America's Got Talent" party that Kelly gave earlier that year. Being upset, she falsified the customer reviews of Jim and Dwight. Dwight, being a paranoid, suspects Kelly from early on, but Jim only comes around to agreeing when he notices that everyone in the office but him and Dwight has a coffee mug with his or her face on it. He asks Ryan about them and is told they were given out by Kelly at her party. Kelly is confronted and admits to the fabrication.
8. What famous prop was given to Dwight by Angela during the "Valentine's Day" episode in the second season?

Answer: Dwight Schrute bobblehead doll

Yes of course, the wildly popular, and commercially successful, Dwight bobblehead doll! It's a Valentine's Day gift from Angela, and in return Dwight gives her a key. We're left to guess what it's a key to. This is the episode where Phyllis receives an enormous number of gifts from Bob Vance and Roy fails to get Pam anything. As of mid-2008, NBC had sold at least 150,000 Dwight bobbleheads!
9. Michael is extremely proud of an object he has mounted on the wall of his condo. What is this $200 object, revealed to the guests in the "Dinner Party" episode?

Answer: A very small plasma TV

The very small plasma TV, so small that Michael apparently has to stand up right in front of it to watch it, was mounted on the wall on an extending bracket. The dinner party guests were Jim and Pam, Angela and Andy, and Dwight and his former, and aging, babysitter, and it was hosted by Jan and Michael. Later in the party, when things go miserably wrong, Jan loses control and throws a Dundie Award across the room, smashing both the Dundie and Michael's beloved plasma TV.
10. Are all five Golden Tickets, each offering a 10 percent discount, sent to the same customer of Dunder Mifflin?

Answer: Yes

Inspired by "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," Michael comes up with the idea of Golden Tickets, which give the discounts to customers who find them in their shipments of paper. Michael mistakenly puts all five of the Golden Tickets into a shipment to their largest customer, thus giving the customer a 50 percent discount for a year.

At first, Dunder Mifflin executives are angry at this stupidity, and so Michael contrives to have Dwight take the fall, pretending it was his idea. But that deception is instantly regretted by Michael when it turns out that the customer is so delighted they make Dunder Mifflin their exclusive supplier of office supplies.
