Hosted by Brick Pimento, "Talent Star" is the biggest music-related talent show in Chicago. The finals are held in an opera house, which is a remodeled 1970s disco house.

Emma is a young girl with high hopes of winning "Talent Star." She's very friendly to all the other finalists, despite that she feels she needs the "Talent Star" prize money the most, as her family is about to lose their farm.

Although it was never confirmed in the movie, fans have speculated that her name may be a reference to certain works of "The Phantom of the Opera." Her first name was supposedly a parody of Emmy Rossum, who was in the 2005 "Phantom of the Opera" movie, and her last name may have been borrowed from Colette Gale, the author of a "Phantom of the Opera" book. None of the people working on the show have confirmed, so it could be a coincidence.

The magician in this movie, "The Great Pauldini," is a reference to the "Scooby-Doo" writer Paul Dini, whose wife is a magician. Dini wrote "The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries" episodes "A Halloween Hassle at Dracula's Castle" and "The 'Dooby Dooby Doo' Ado." He, along with his wife, wrote "Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra Doo" together, which is magic-themed.

Steve Trilby's name is a reference to the story "Trilby," which inspired the "Phantom of the Opera."

Steve Trilby terrorized the opera house when it was a disco in the 1970s because he didn't like disco music. He believed he was ugly because he apparently didn't understand the concept of a mirror, so he lived in the sewers for forty years.

He tells the gang that he hasn't terrorized the opera house since the seventies, so the gang soon realizes that there is another phantom on the loose.

The phantom is revealed to be Mel Richmond, who wanted to collect the insurance money by pretending it was an accident. The gang realizes though that this is still not the phantom they are looking for.

Mel Richmond was arrested for insurance fraud immediately after the unmasking.

The gang realizes that there is yet another phantom, when he threatens to destroy the place unless Chrissy Damon wins the competition.

Lance wanted his daughter, Chrissy to win, and went to great lengths to do so. He was arrested when he attempted to steal Emma's guitar so that she couldn't play. When he was arrested, Chrissy mentioned he should "watch his step," possibly meaning that she was in on it, although she was never arrested.

Dewey was trying to steal the soap diamond, to add to his collection of cleaning products. He was the reason that (one of) the phantom(s) smelled like lemon cleanser.
