Question 2 of 10
2. In "Spaced" Series 1, Episode 2: "Gatherings", when Tim is speaking to Mike on the phone inviting him to the house-warming party, he is absent-mindedly sculpting a mountain out of mashed potato on his plate. The Homage-o-Meter references which 1970s science-fiction film, in which one of the characters does something similar? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. "Spaced" Series 1, Episode 4: "Battles" contains the paintball episode, in which Tim confronts his nemesis, Duane (who has earlier "stolen" his girlfriend). What does the Homage-o-Meter indicate as the inspiration for the scene in which Tim cradles the "dying" Mike in his arms? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. "Spaced" Series 1, Episode 5: "Chaos". Early on this classic episode, which contains numerous film references, is a scene in which Daisy gets all gooey over Colin the dog. Tim is less impressed. When she asks "How can you not like him, he's so cute?", Tim's response is "Yes, well, that's how it all starts, with "Oohs" and "Ahhs", but later there's barking and biting..." This is a reference to a scene in which film directed by Steven Spielberg? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. "Spaced" Series 1, Episode 7: "Ends". In this crucial scene in the last episode of the first series, Tim is preparing to meet his ex-girlfriend, thinking that they may get back together again. Daisy clearly thinks this is a bad idea, and says to him "Take care of yourself...'Cos that's what you're best at, isn't it?" Tim may well recognise this reference to a scene in one of his favourite films - but which one? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. "Spaced" Series 2, Episode 1: "Back" opens with Daisy returning to the flat after her Asian holiday. She puts some pop tarts in the toaster, then sees a gun on the worktop. She picks it up...then the toilet flushes and Mike emerges. As Daisy stands pointing the gun at Mike, the pop tarts jump with a sudden noise out of the toaster... The Homage-o-Meter confirms that this whole sequence closely replicates a scene in which film? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. "Spaced" Series 2, Episode 2: "Change". A running joke through the whole of this episode is Tim's intense dislike of which film? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "Spaced" Series 2, Episode 3: "Mettle" is another episode where a whole sub-plot is built around references to a famous film. Daisy obtains a job in a restaurant kitchen, where she finds herself working alongside a boy called Billy with a stammer, a large silent Indian, and a menacing female supervisor. - Mike: "There's been an accident...somebody got hurt."
- Tim: "Who?"
- Mike: "A lady."
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Spaced" Series 1, Episode 1: "Beginnings", when Marsha is showing Tim and Daisy round the flat, she opens a large cupboard to reveal two identical small girls staring out. In unison they say "We've finished cleaning the cupboard Mrs Klein". To which horror film does the Homage-o-Meter confirm this to be a reference?

Answer: The Shining

The girls are in Girl Guide uniform, and Marsha's rather unlikely explanation is that it is "bob-a-job week". Both series of "Spaced" contain numerous throwaway references to "The Shining" - almost as many as to the "Star Wars" films.

Answer: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The scene is the one in which Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) sculpts the Devil's Tower on his dinner plate. Tim, however, does not go on to build a gigantic model in the middle of his living room.

Answer: Every War Film Ever

This quintessential "dying comrade" scene occurs after Mike throws himself in front of Tim, and takes the paintball fired at him by Duane. Fortunately his "death" is strictly temporary, although Duane has to be carried off in an ambulance, having been shot in a very sensitive spot by Tim.

Answer: The Lost World: Jurassic Park 2

The "Jurassic Park 2" scene is the one in which Dr Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) recalls the events in the previous film: "Oh, yeah. Ooh, ahhh, that's how it always starts. Then later there's running and screaming". This is a rather unfair comparison with Colin, who shows little interest in roaring loudly and eating people.

Answer: Star Wars IV: A New Hope

Daisy of course is worried that this will mean the end of their convenient flat-sharing arrangement, leaving her without anywhere to live. The "Star Wars" reference is to the scene in which Han Solo appears to be about to fly off in the "Millennium Falcon", abandoning the rebels rather then help them attack the Death Star. Luke says to him "Well, take care of yourself, Han. I guess that's what you're best at, isn't it?" Fortunately, in both cases, there is a happy resolution. Han returns in the nick of time to save the day, and Tim doesn't move back in with Sarah. Hurray.

Answer: Pulp Fiction

An almost shot-for-shot homage to the scene in "Pulp Fiction" in which Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) shoots Vincent Vega (John Travolta). Fortunately, the "Spaced" sequence doesn't conclude with Daisy shooting Mike. The scene is notable also for revealing the fact that Mike reads Jeanette Winterson novels in the toilet; a revelation comparable to that later in the series when he is discovered baking scones.
7. "Spaced" Series 2, Episode 2: "Change". A running joke through the whole of this episode is Tim's intense dislike of which film?

Answer: Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

The episode starts with Tim being sacked from his job at "Fantasy Bazaar" when he refuses to sell a child a Jar-Jar Binks doll. While "Critters 4" and "Batman & Robin" are worthy of anyone's contempt, "Hawk the Slayer" is in fact a particular favourite of Bilbo, the owner of "Fantasy Bazaar", who apparently once punched someone in the face for saying it was rubbish.
But which film is it?

Answer: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Luckily for all "Spaced" fans, Daisy does escape with her life at the end of the episode, unlike McMurphy (Jack Nicolson) in the original film. This episode is particularly replete with film references, with sequences paying homage to both "Robocop" and "Fight Club" in the plotline following Tim and Mike's "Robot Wars"-style killing machine.
9. "Spaced" Series 2, Episode 4: "Help". While Mike and Tim are hurrying in Mike's van to retrieve Tim's unflattering cartoon of comics supreme Damien Knox, they knock someone off her bicycle. The following dialogue is a reference to which supernatural film, as confirmed by the Homage-o-Meter? - Mike: "There's been an accident...somebody got hurt." - Tim: "Who?" - Mike: "A lady."

Answer: The Sixth Sense

To extend the in-joke even further, the lady in question, who has been knocked off her bike by Tim, is played by Olivia Williams, who plays Anna Crowe, Bruce Willis' wife, in "The Sixth Sense". Unlike the lady in "The Sixth Sense", she is very far from being dead, and proceeds to give Tim a good telling off.
10. "Spaced" Series 2, Episode 6: "Dissolution". The whole final scene, in which Tim and Daisy watch Brian and Mike leaving in the latter's van to find Marsha and persuade her not to sell the house, is based on the conclusion to which film?

Answer: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

You hardly need the Homage-o-Meter to tell you that this is a cleverly constructed reference to the final scene of the film, in which Lando and Chewbacca set off to find Han Solo, who we have earlier seen being encased in carbonite. Note in particular Mike's yawn, which echoes Chewbacca's roar. The "Star Wars" theme plays over the closing credits. As with the "Star Wars" saga, this downbeat ending leads to to a happier conclusion in the following, final episode of the second (and so far final) series of "Spaced".
