In the beginning of the episode, Prue was at a lake. The lake she was at just so happened to be the very lake where her mother drowned. Back in 1978, Patty went to this lake because there was a water demon in the lake and it was killing people. Patty went there because her mission was to vanquish the demon.

It also had the ability to possess the dead bodies of its victims, making other people think that the victim was in trouble and in need of help. It would do this so it could lure other people to the water so it could drown them as well.

It appeared as if the only way to vanquish this demon was with electricity since electricity could separate water particles.

When Patty went up against the water demon, she didn't know that the demon had immunity to her power of slowing down molecules. Then, Patty's lover at the time, known as Samuel, came out and he tried to save her. She used her power to freeze him and when she turned around the demon entered her and drowned her from the inside.

After Patty died, it appeared as if Sam blamed himself for her death because he didn't save her. After she died, Sam went to the Elders and he clipped his wings. Then he spent his days living on the camp by the lake. According to Sam, he knew that his lover's three little girls would one day come to the lake and try to face the demon that took their mother's life. So, Sam waited by the lake for the Charmed Ones to come.

When they finally made it he would be there to stop and protect them.

When Prue, Piper and Phoebe went to the lake the first time, Sam used some type of powder that seemed to make the Charmed Ones' memories very faint. They went home and went to sleep and when they woke up, Piper had a rash on her arms. Sshe was really itchy because while they were at the lake she must've stumbled across some poison ivy, according to Phoebe.

After Prue, Piper, Phoebe and Leo found out that Patty and Sam were in love, they had to find out exactly how Patty died and how Patty was going to vanquish this water demon. Since Phoebe could basically see anything, she took Sam's hands in hers and then she had a vision.

In her vision, she saw her mother reaching for electric wires that were on the dock at the lake and she was going to electrocute the water demon.

Near the end of the episode, Prue went to face the water demon and Sam went with her. When they got on the dock, the water demon attacked them and when it did, it entered Sam's body and then Sam grabbed the electric wires and he told Prue to flip the switch. Prue did as he said, and the water demon was electrocuted and vanquished.

When Prue, Piper and Phoebe went to the lake the first time, they went into the place where Sam was living and Piper found some letters that were there. Right before Leo orbed in and told them that they had to get out before Sam came back, Piper stuffed the letters in her pocket.

Then, Sam used the powder on the girls that made their memories faint, and Piper forgot about the letters. When Piper was doing her laundry, she found the letters stuffed in her pocket and then her and Leo read them. That was how they found out that Patty and Sam were in love.

When Prue flipped the switch and the wires electrocuted the water demon, Sam was electrocuted too because he was holding the wires at the time. Then, he fell on the dock and Prue, Piper, Phoebe and Leo rushed to his side. Leo tried to heal him, but he couldn't because Sam being healed was not meant to be.

Then, out of a beautiful white light, Patty's spirit appeared before Sam and only Sam could see her. Then, Sam passed on and his spirit appeared next to Patty's and they held hands on walked away together again.
