Joey didn't know that he had to get a birthday present for Emma because she was just turning one and she wouldn't know. Phoebe told him that she was going to sing a song, and suggested that he stick a fork in an apple for her, but he decided to do a dramatic reading of one of her books instead.

Before they knew about the party, Chandler had rented a room at the Woodford Inn in Vermont, but Rachel and Ross really wanted them to stay for Emma's party and then drive up after. They stayed, but they weren't happy about it and wanted to leave the entire time because Emma was sleeping anyway.
