Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" we were introduced to our heroine. Which actress played Buffy Summers? .

Answer: Sarah Michelle Gellar

At the age of 4 Sarah Michelle Gellar appeared in a made for tv film called "An Invasion of Privacy" and later various advertisements. Although no stranger to cameras by then, her breakthrough role was in the tv series "Swan Crossing", which in turn led to a lead part in "All My Children".
2. Principal Flutie only survived for half the first season as he was eaten by a pack of students. Which actor, known more for his portrayal as an alien in "Star Trek", succeeded Principal Flutie?

Answer: Armin Shimerman

There were two other Sunnydale High principals during the series, Principal Snyder portrayed by Armin Shimerman and Principal Wood played by D.B. Woodside.
Armin Shimerman also played the Ferengi bartender, Quark, in "Star Trek:The Next Generation", "Star Trek:Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek:Voyager".
3. Who was the first person to use the nickname "The Scooby Gang"?

Answer: Xander

The Scooby Gang or Scoobies was a term first mentioned by Xander Harris in the episode "What's My Line:Part 1". The Scoobies consisted of the core members Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles (Buffy's Watcher). Throughout the entire series various other people joined and left such as Oz, Tara and Anya but the central characters remained until the final episode. The term was taken from the Hannera-Barbera cartoon series "Scooby Doo, Where are You?".
4. Ironically, Buffy's one "true" love was revealed to be a vampire called Angel. What was the name Angel was given at birth?

Answer: Liam

David Boreanaz played Angel, the vampire with a soul, and Buffy's first love from 1997 to 1999. He appeared in the very first episode as a temporary character and left to star in his own spin off "Angel".
5. Buffy died twice (the first time in season 1 and the second in season 5). Her brief death in season 1 caused a new slayer to be activated. What was her name?

Answer: Kendra

The episode "What's My Line. Part One" emphasized how Buffy and Kendra were total opposites in the way each undertook their role as slayer. Kendra (played by Bianca Lawson) had been taken away from her family as a child to concentrate on her training. Buffy, on the other hand, had a network of close friends and helpers. In the end though, they parted as friends as Kendra gifted her favourite stake, Mr. Pointy, to Buffy. However, when Kendra was killed by Drusilla in the season 2 finale another slayer, Faith, was activated.
6. Joss Whedon, the brains behind "Buffy the Vampire Slayer, formed his own production company to air the programme. What was its name? (It appeared at the end of every episode).

Answer: Mutant Enemy Produtions

Joss Whedon drew and voiced the company's mascot, which was a badly drawn animated vampire. At the end of every episode it crossed the screen uttering the words "Grrrr Argghh". Sometimes unexpected variations to its behaviour took place, such as that after the episode "Amends" where it sported a red Santa hat!
Many other credited members of the production team were part of Mutant Enemy, including Jane Espenson, David Fury, David Greenwalt, Marti Noxton and Tim Minear.
7. Rupert Giles was Sunnydale High's Librarian until the school burned down at the end of season 3. His unemployment resulted in him buying (a year later) a store to earn a living. What was the name of this store?

Answer: The Magic Box

A magic shop had appeared first in season 3 in the same location called Uncle Bob's Magic Cabinet. By the time Giles bought the store its name had changed to The Magic Box. The store was where Buffy and the gang could meet up and research, replacing Sunnydale High School's library.
8. Anya, the ex-demon, suffered from leporiphobia which was first mentioned in the season 4 episode "Fear, Itself". She had an irrational fear of which carrot eating animals?

Answer: Rabbits

Anya's fear and loathing of rabbits was not explained in the series, but when her life as a human called Aud was revealed she appeared to have no problem with them.
Aud was transformed by the demon D'Hoffryn into "Anyanka, Patron Saint of the Women Scorned" after being let down by her boyfriend. Throughout her time in Sunnydale she was known as Anya Jenkins.
9. The episode "Once More With Feeling" was completely different to any other, as well as being the most technically complex episode. Why was this?

Answer: It was a musical.

Joss Whedon had previously stated that he wanted to cross the boundaries for a TV series and this episode certainly did that. He wrote this musical with each character in mind. As well as singing their own parts, the whole cast had dance routines to learn. The musical styles ranged from the Astaire and Rogers style tribute by Xander and Anya to the heavy rock style song sung by Spike. The episode was critically considered a success.
10. Willow's boyfriend Oz was a regular throughout seasons 2 to 4. He played lead guitar in a band which appeared in the Bronze regularly. What was the name of the band?

Answer: Dingoes Ate My Baby

Seth Green played the part of Oz for three seasons even though it was originally considered to be temporary. It was whilst he and Willow were dating that he became a werewolf (from a bite his cousin Jordy gave him). Interestingly, as I was researching on the internet I read that Oz had appeared in several episodes wearing a sheepskin jacket.

This brought to mind the phrase "a wolf in sheep's clothing".
