Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The series 'The Bill' evolved from a previous British police programme called:

Answer: 'Woodentop'

The production's working name, 'Old Bill', was ditched as it was considered offensive to The Met. The term 'Woodentop' was only known in the UK and so was changed to 'The Bill', as the series was aimed at a broad international market.
2. The character who spoke the very first lines in episode 1 was:

Answer: Sgt Alec Peters

In episode 1, Sgt Peters was handing over the shift to Sgt Cryer.
3. The Sun Hill station's radio room is known as:

Answer: CAD

CAD stands for Computer Aided Dispatch, however many people think it is short for: Communications and Dispatch.
4. Sun Hill's hospital is called:

Answer: St Hugh's

St Hugh's is a purpose built set, which along with the Courtroom, was constructed as it was planned as a frequent location. It was thought cheaper to build these sets, than to continually rent actual premises.
5. DC 'Tosh' Lines (Kevin Lloyd) was written out of the series and subsequently died. The major issue with the producers was:

Answer: He was an alcoholic who became unreliable on the set

Kevin Lloyd's character Tosh Lines was very popular. The producers persisted with Lloyd's role for a long time, whilst attempting to get him assistance with his alcoholism.
6. The Sun Hill Station had to be extensively rebuilt after a dramatic episode in 1990, when:

Answer: A car bomb exploded in the carpark

Chief Supt Brownlow directed that PC Melvin re-park a Jaguar that had been seized earlier. It contained a large bomb which exploded, killing the PC.
7. Sgt Alec Peters was seriously injured in a 1991 episode when he was:

Answer: Stabbed in the stomach

After Sgt Peters eventually returned to work, he was never quite the same. He had lost his nerve and in one episode he 'exploded' in CAD, after spilling a cup of coffee on his computer.
8. A traffic accident involving a police vehicle is known in British police jargon as a:

Answer: PolAc

Police dread making this call. It's hard to say what's worse - the paperwork war or the ribbing by fellow officers!
9. PC Reg Hollis initially held the following office:

Answer: Federation Rep

This role cemented Reg as the most popular character ever. His confrontations with Brownlow and Conway became the stuff of legend. He was also the station collator (Local Intelligence Officer) around this time.
10. The officer portrayed as a former amateur boxer was:

Answer: PC George Garfield

Actor Huw Higginson has never been a boxer to my knowledge. Prior to becoming an actor he worked as a scaffolder's mate and an encyclopedia salesman. He did however play rugby and cricket.
