Set in New York City, "Law & Order" told the story of a crime first from the police point of view, and then from that of the court proceedings. After its debut in October 1990, the show was a regular awards-winner, including a Screen Actors Guild Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series for Sam Waterston in 1999.

He joined in the fifth season in 1994 and went on to appear in 333 consecutive episodes before his first break, in January 2009. The character of Jack McCoy was appointed Executive Assistant District Attorney in 1994 and was appointed DA at the end of Season 17. Sam Waterston was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on November 15 1940.

He appeared in many theatre productions and movie roles included "Savages" (1972), "The Great Gatsby" (1974), "Capricorn One" (1978), Heaven's Gate (1980).

David Caruso was born in New York City on January 7th 1956. Early film roles included "Rambo: First Blood" and "An Officer And a Gentleman". He was a gang leader in "Hill Street Blues" and a cop in "NYPD Blue."
