Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What field of study did 19 year old Judy Robinson have to postpone in order to make the trip with with her family?

Answer: musical comedy

Believe it or not, Judy was studying for a career in musical comedy. Her brother Will graduated from a prestigious science school at the age of nine, and sister Penny had an IQ of 127. Both were child prodigies. Poor Judy's role on the show was relegated to playing the ditsy blond hottie and eye candy for Major West.
2. What was the reason for trying to reach another planet?

Answer: Earth was getting overpopulated.

Just before launch, the President makes an announcement on TV and explains to the viewers about Earth's over population and hopes that the people of Earth will be able to move to another planet. In the 2003 film of the same name, the reason was because the people of Earth were about to use up all of Earth's natural resources including fossil fuels.
3. What was the name of the Robinsons' spaceship?

Answer: Gemini 12

In 1965, the Gemini program was the ongoing program at the time. Though the timeline for the show was 1997, they may have thought Gemini would still be around or perhaps they felt that they needed to use a recognizable current name for the ship. In the 2003 movie, the ship that launched was the Jupiter 1.

When the Jupiter 1 reached orbit, its outer shell broke away to reveal the Jupiter 2 inside.
4. How many years were the Robinson's supposed to remain in hyper-sleep during the trip?

Answer: 98 years

In the pilot, the journey was supposed to take 98 years to reach Alpha Centauri which is 4.37 light years away. In the first episode of the TV series, the crew was to sleep for only five and a half years. More than likely, they changed the amount of time it would take because the narrator of the pilot episode said that the ship would be traveling at near the speed of light for 98 years. 98 years at the speed of light would have put them way past Alpha Centauri.
5. What was the robot's main job on the ship?

Answer: There was no robot

The robot was introduced in the first episode of the TV series and was not in the pilot. In the first TV episode, the robot is programmed by Dr. Smith to destroy navigation and communications of the ship eight hours after liftoff.
6. What caused the spaceship to go off course?

Answer: The ship ran into a meteor storm.

In the pilot, the ship ran into a meteor storm which threw it off course. The crew remained asleep during the ordeal and awoke after the ship crashed landed on an uncharted planet. In the first TV episode, it was Dr. Smith's added weight that threw the ship off course and into the meteor storm.
7. How many years had passed from the time the crew launched to the time that they crashed on the planet?

Answer: 3 1/2 years

The ship launched in 1997. Six months after the crash, you see Professor Robinson writing in his log book with the date of December 3, 2001. He took his readings from the ship's chronometer. He details the progress that the crew has made in the six months of being stranded. They set up camp and also started a garden to feed themselves.
8. What kind of monsters inhabited the planet?

Answer: one-eyed giants

Along with ostrich-like birds, spiny turtles, and small pointy-eared monkeys, there were also giant one-eyed monsters on the planet. While exploring away from base camp, Professor Robinson discovers that the temperature in their area was going to drop to below zero in 24 hours.

He decides it would be best to move their camp south to a safer and warmer location. Before they can get back to camp, he and Major West get trapped in a cave by one of the giants.
9. When Dr. Robinson and Major West get trapped in a cave by one of the monster creatures, who rescues them?

Answer: Will

When professor Robinson and Major West don't return from an exploring expedition, Will goes in search of them armed with a ray gun. When he sees that the monster has his dad and Major West trapped, he fires the gun and hits the creature in the chest and kills it.
10. The theme music for the pilot was taken from what science fiction film?

Answer: The Day the Earth Stood Still

In the Pilot episode, the opining music is the same music from the 1951 movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still". When the actual series started, the music was changed to a different and more up-beat arrangement. Michael Rennie, who starred as Klaatu in "The Day the Earth Stood Still", starred in a two part episode of "Lost in Space" in 1966 called "The Keeper".

He played a type of galactic zoo keeper and wanted to take some of the Robinson's and add them to his collection of creatures.
