Josiah was defending Nathan's father in his trial and had given an eloquent closing argument to which Vin made his remark.
2. As they were laying a coffin in the ground in "The Old West" and J.D. wanted to say a prayer, Vin told J.D. "It's a coffin full of _____".

Answer: Rocks

Vin, J.D., Chris, and Mary wanted some outlaws to believe Judge Travis had died of a gunshot wound. J.D. filled a coffin full of rocks so they could bury it. When they lowered it to the ground, J.D. thought they should say a prayer or something over the coffin and that's when Vin made the above mentioned line.
