Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who killed Caroline with the intention of sending Stefan and Damon a message?

Answer: Katherine

Caroline had been badly injured in the car accident that happened at the end of season one. Matt and Tyler were not as badly injured, but Caroline's life was hanging in the balance. Damon offered to heal her with his blood, but he was met with several objections.

It was when Bonnie agreed to it that Elena consented as well. Damon fed Caroline his blood and she healed. At the end of the season two premier, Katherine came along and smothered Caroline in the hospital. She told Caroline to give the Salvatores a message- "game on". Caroline, now a vampire, delivered the message and began to recall everything Damon had done to her before the accident.
2. The Lockwood curse turned out to be lycanthropy/werewolfism.

Answer: True

Lycanthropy is the ability to transform into a wolf. After the death of Tyler's father, his Uncle Mason came to town to try and help Tyler with the curse. There were several clues throughout season one that Tyler was a wolf. Then, in the finale, Mayor Lockwood and Tyler were both affected by the vampire device, which is what caused Tyler to wreck the car with Matt and Caroline inside. Mayor Lockwood perished, as the townsfolk assumed he was a vampire.
3. Who told Sheriff Liz Forbes that Damon and Stefan are vampires?

Answer: Mason Lockwood

In episode 5, "Kill or Be Killed", Stefan tried to undo some of the damage done by Damon trying to kill Mason. Mason wasn't buying the good guy routine, and Stefan hit the message home with a reminder that Mason wasn't as strong without a full moon. Mason knew he was in trouble, so he warned Liz that she had vampires right under her nose.

She did not want to believe it was true, but when Damon choked on lemonade spiked with Vervain, she had to accept that fact. Mason tricked the men into following him into the woods outside of the new town park, and they were shot with wood bullets and taken into the old Lockwood cellar out in the forest. Caroline and Elena saved the men, and Liz found out that her daughter was a vampire too.

Instead of killing Liz, Damon locked her in his cellar to wait out the Vervain in her system so he could then compel her to forget all she'd learned.

At the end of this episode, we learned that Mason wanted the moonstone for Katherine, who'd been working this scam for a very long time. Eternity did not look good on an evil mastermind like Katherine.
4. Who killed Mason Lockwood in the episode "Plan B"?

Answer: Damon

Damon spent a great deal of time torturing Mason for information. He finally revealed to Damon (and Jeremy) that he was with Katherine and it was she who wanted the elusive moonstone. Apparently, the moonstone was an instrument used to remove the vampire/werewolf curse of daylight/full moon.

After Mason revealed this information, Damon ripped his heart from his chest. Jeremy did not care for this aspect, but Damon warned him that he better learn to deal with all areas of vampire life. The moonstone was hidden in a well. Bonnie was able to read it from Mason while he was still unconscious. Stefan went down into the well to retrieve it, but the water was filled with Vervain. Caroline and Elena saved him, and Elena brought up the stone from the well.
5. Who did we discover was Katherine's unintentional vampire maker/sire?

Answer: Rose

Katherine, then known by her birth name Katerina, had Rose's blood before she hanged herself. As a human, Katerina had a child out of wedlock, a shame to her family. No one in the vampire world knew of this offspring for a very long time, but it was most likely the source of Elena's connection to Katherine. Trevor had helped Katerina escape from the vampire Klaus, who wanted to use Katherine/Katerina to end the sun and moon curse.

In the end, many centuries later, it cost him his vampiric life. Now, Klaus was after the next doppelganger, Elena. Elena would have to become a vampire, or die prematurely, to end his ability to break the curse by using her as a human sacrifice.

She turned down Katherine's offer to become a vampire, but made a deal with Elijah to stop Klaus.
6. In "The Descent", was Damon able to save Rose after she was bitten by Jules?

Answer: No

Rose suffered a bite from the werewolf Jules in episode 11, "By the Light of the Moon". Jules' intent was to kill Damon, which she confirmed to him in episode 12, "The Descent". Damon cared for Rose, much to his own dismay, and he also felt guilt because he knew the infection was meant to kill him. He tried to figure out a cure, but Jules was not forthcoming, if she even knew at all. Damon and Elena cared for Rose, while Stefan tried to locate Elena's mother Isobel. In the end, there was no saving Rose, who'd lived for 500 years. Damon was with her as she lay dying, and finally he staked her to end her suffering.

Rose was played by Lauren Cohan and Jules by Michaela McManus. Fans may remember Lauren from her role as Bela on "Supernatural. And, Michaela has played memorable characters on "One Tree Hill" and "Law and Order SVU".
7. Katherine had taken up residence in the Salvatore house after being freed from the tomb in episode fifteen. So, who was left alive by the end of episode 16, "The House Guest"?

Answer: John Gilbert

John had pretty much bullied Alaric into returning the immortality ring given to him by Isobel. He kept taunting him by teasing Jenna into doubting her ability to trust Alaric. So, Alaric returned the ring and left himself vulnerable. Elijah had been staked, twice, in episode 15's "The Dinner Party".

The first time he was staked was by Alaric. Damon planned to do it himself, but was warned at the last minute by Alaric. Stefan and Elena had discovered more Jonathan Gilbert journals that revealed the truth about the special stake and ash that could kill an Original. If a vampire used the stake on an Original like Elijah, that vampire would die as well. So, Alaric staked Elijah from behind.

Naturally, he had to pull his hand back out, which allowed Elijah to heal, much like the time Damon "killed" him previously.

The stake had to remain inside Elijah for him to remain dead. So, Elena tricked him into getting close enough to her, so she could stake him herself. Then, his body was taken to the Salvatore home. Elijah's death broke his compulsion over Katherine, so she was free to leave the tomb.

She promised to help Jonathan and Isobel protect Elena, and agreement that happened off screen. When Luka and his father tried to magic the stake out of Elijah, Damon was forced to kill Luka. During Dr. Martin's quest for revenge he was killed, but not before returning Bonnie's powers to her (he'd taken them in the previous episode) and adding a little of his own in the bargain.
8. How did Elena's mother, Isobel, die in "Know Thy Enemy"?

Answer: she killed herself

Isobel (actress Mia Kirshner) returned to town and immediately revealed herself to Jenna. Though Jenna did not get the chance to find out the whole vampiric truth of things, she was crushed that everyone knew Isobel was alive the entire time she'd been dating Alaric. Jenna decided to leave town, and live at the college for awhile, which was probably her best bet for the time being.

It turned out that Isobel had found the elusive and ancient Klaus. She'd been compelled by him to trick Katherine into being captured. Once she'd fulfilled that compulsion, and one of Klaus' witches had captured Katherine, the witch told Isobel that her mission was complete.

She'd met her compulsion and was free. She'd taken Elena to the site of her headstone, which her parents had placed despite having no evidence of her death.

She told her daughter that she believed a part of her was buried there, the human half that Elena had never had the chance to meet. Before she died, Isobel had the chance to tell both Alaric and Elena she was sorry and that she cared for both of them.

At the end, she told Elena she knew she'd been a huge disappointment to her, and then removed her protective necklace. Isobel went up in flames, dying right on the site of her own grave. She was, at last, done.
9. Of the choices below, which was NOT one that Elijah revealed to Elena in episode 19, "Klaus"?

Answer: Klaus was the father of Katerina's long lost baby

The origins of the Sun and Moon curse were have thought to been Aztec, based on some drawings. After Elena awakened Elijah and made a deal with him, he revealed to her that the entire curse and all drawings associated with it were a work of fiction created by Klaus himself.

The curse that Klaus needed to end was the one that wouldn't allow him to fully embrace both sides of his demonic lineage. He wanted to be able to be both vampire and werewolf in tandem, and create a new species on his own. Their entire family had been vampires, the first of their kind, and impervious to the pitfalls of the diluted bloodlines that followed down from their various makings. But, Elijah's mother had conceived her baby Klaus during a liaison with a werewolf, mixing their bloodlines for the first time.

While Elijah had loved his brother dearly, he knew that Klaus was too dangerous to all creatures to be allowed to live. When he'd found a way for the doppelganger to survive the reversal spell, Klaus dismissed it.

He said Katerina was there to serve a purpose and her life was nothing more. This was when Elijah's opinion began to change. He swore to Elena that he could save her during the ritual (no need for her to turn into a vampire as Katerina had), and that Klaus would be the one who died. But, could Elijah really be trusted? Damon thought there was no way, which led to a violent showdown with Stefan. Elijah later revealed, in the season finale, that Klaus had murdered their entire family, and that he wanted revenge as much as he wanted to protect the world from Klaus.
10. In the season two penultimate episode, "The Sun Also Rises", the curse of the Sun and Moon was broken. Of the choices listed, which event did NOT take place?

Answer: Klaus was killed by Bonnie

Damon suffered his "nip" from Tyler in the previous episode, "The Last Day". Tyler turned into a wolf before Damon, Caroline and Matt could get far enough away from him. Tyler bit Damon, as Damon protected the others from him. Damon's condition slowly deteriorated as the finale progressed, much like Rose's slow death after Jules bit her.

The sacrificial ritual began to end the curse, with Jules being Klaus' first victim. He tore her heart from her chest and allowed her blood to drip into Greta Martin's bubbling cauldron.

His next murder was that of Jenna Sommers, Elena and Jeremy's aunt and caregiver. She was a full vampire at the point, as Klaus needed. Stefan tried to trade himself in Jenna's place, but Klaus would have none of it. He staked Stefan, in order to keep him immobile, and then staked Jenna to her death.

In the meantime, Bonnie performed a spell with John Gilbert to ensure (hopefully) that Elena would wake up from her own death still human. Klaus drained Elena's blood as Stefan watched, and began to change into a wolf. Bonnie and Damon showed up to fight Klaus, with Damon snapping Greta's neck before she could react.

In the end, Klaus offered Elijah a trade he could not refuse, the locations of their family's bodies, and Elijah disappeared into the night with his baby brother. Elena did awaken human, and John died immediately after that. After the funeral of Jenna and John, Damon revealed to Stefan that he was dying from Tyler's bite and asked Stefan to not tell Elena. He said she did not need one more grave to mourn over. . .
