Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We witnessed the return of Captain Jack at the beginning of the episode "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang". He was very happy to be back, but his team was not so enthusiastic. What did Jack say when Gwen accused him of leaving them?

Answer: "I'm sorry."

Jack was genuinely regretful at having left his team, and apologised for it. He told them he'd 'found his Doctor', and insisted to them all that he'd come back for them.
2. Again in the first episode, "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang", Captain John Hart warned Ianto that his team mates were in danger and to 'run'. Who did Ianto go looking for first?

Answer: Owen and Toshiko

After failing to reach Gwen with the bluetooth communicator, Ianto went in search of Owen and Toshiko. Owen was shot by Captain John, but it wasn't serious. The three of them then went to look for Gwen, whom John had poisoned and locked inside a shipping container. The episode did not reveal whether they then went in search of Jack, or whether Jack rejoined them at the Hub.
3. In the episode "Sleeper", how was Jack able to contact Owen, Toshiko and Ianto after the sleeper agents took out all forms of communication?

Answer: He taped wire to the aerial of the SUV to create an old-fashioned two-way radio.

Jack taped a piece of wire that looked suspiciously like a coat hanger to the SUV's aerial, enabling him to communicate with his colleagues via old-fashioned radio. Later on, it became pretty obvious that Ianto was extremely unhappy with his innovation, possibly due to the damage it likely did to the car - which Ianto would have been responsible for repairing.

It was possibly one of the few times we saw Jack retreating in the show!
4. According to Jack, in "To The Last Man", what was going to happen to Tommy Brockless upon his return to his own time?

Answer: He would be shot for cowardice.

Jack confessed to Toshiko that Tommy would slip back into a state of shell-shock upon returning to his own time. He would be unable to fight and end up being shot as a coward. Toshiko didn't want to send Tommy back to that fate but in the end she had no other choice.
5. In "Meat", Rhys finally learnt the truth about Gwen's job and was introduced to the Hub and the Torchwood team for the first time. He offered to help the team in their latest investigation, much to Gwen's displeasure. In what way did he help them out?

Answer: He drove a van with the team hidden in the back.

Rhys drove a van to the suspect site, with the team hidden in the back. This allowed them the chance to get inside a warehouse undetected and locate an alien that was being harvested for meat. Unfortunately, things went haywire when Rhys got himself caught by the men responsible, putting the entire mission at risk.
6. The episode "Adam" showed us a vulnerable side of all five team members. At the end of the episode, what was the catalyst to make Jack take the retcon pill, and put an end to Adam's existence?

Answer: Adam twisted Jack's last remaining happy memory of his family.

Adam offered to help Jack remember his last happy memory of his family, but then he twisted the memory, much to Jack's distress. When Jack cried that he wanted his real memory back, Adam offered to give it to him in exchange for his freedom and continued existence. Jack rejected the deal, took the retcon and sacrificed his memory to stop Adam.
7. Jack called on a friend to help the team out in "Reset". Martha Jones came to them from UNIT, and it quickly became obvious to the others that she and Jack shared a special bond. When Owen expressed concern about allowing Martha to go undercover, what was Jack's response?

Answer: "I'd trust Martha if the world was ending... and, in fact, I did."

Jack, at his ambiguous best, told Owen that he would trust Martha even if the world was ending, and that he in fact did. This referred to the episode "The Last of the Time Lords", from season three of "Doctor Who", when Jack spent a year in captivity while Martha walked the Earth and passed on the message about the Doctor.
8. After the shock ending of "Reset", Jack went looking for the matching pair to the 'Risen Mitten' - an item which we last saw in the season one episode "They Keep Killing Suzie". Who gave him the location of this second glove?

Answer: A child with the ability to tell the future through Tarot cards

Jack went a to a child psychic, who told him where to find it in exchange for the promise of a favour owed. She tried to warn him against using it, but knew he would not listen.
9. "A Day in the Death" found Owen on the roof of a building with a young woman who was intending to end her life. At first it appeared that Owen had the same intention, but later revealed another purpose. What was he doing up there?

Answer: He went up to talk her out of it.

Owen admitted towards the end of the episode that he had already resolved his personal issues when he saw her up there, and decided to try and help. It showed a more mellow and caring side to the doctor, who had previously been extrememly angry at his new situation.
10. Despite a major personality clash, Rhys and Jack finally seemed to come to a truce by the end of "Something Borrowed". Jack got to dance briefly with new bride Gwen, but who then cut in to dance with Jack?

Answer: Ianto

Ianto, who had been filling in as DJ at the reception, cut in on Jack and Gwen while they danced. Gwen thought he wanted to dance with her, and was momentarily embarrassed when he turned to Jack instead. Gwen rejoined Rhys, leaving Jack and Ianto to have their moment on the dance floor.
11. "From Out of the Rain" showed Ianto, Gwen and Owen attending opening night at an old cinema. What was the name of that cinema?

Answer: The Electro

Ianto told Jack about how his father used to take him to the Electro every Saturday when he was a boy, and they would see films together.
12. "Adrift" was an episode in which Gwen learned the hard way that sometimes she needed to trust Jack and take his word at face value. What was it that Jack tried to keep her from investigating?

Answer: Disappearances of people caused by the rift.

At the urging of old friend and former colleague PC Andy, Gwen began to investigate the disappearance of fourteen year-old Jonah. In the course of her investigation, she discovered that many people had disappeared as a result of the rift. Jack tried to block her, but she persisted and eventually discovered some of the missing people had in fact been returned through the rift, and that Jack had set up a secure facility on an island to house them.

The anticipated reunion between Jonah and his mother turned very bitter when it became apparent that Jonah's experience had driven him insane, and Gwen learned the hard lesson that not all mysteries were meant to be solved.
13. In "Fragments" we learnt about how Jack, Ianto, Owen and Toshiko all came to join Torchwood Three. Whilst Toshiko and Owen were recruited by Jack, Ianto's recruitment was a little more unique. How did he become a member of Torchwood Three?

Answer: He stalked Jack, and proved himself by helping Jack to catch Myfanwy the pterodactyl.

Ianto first showed up to help Jack catch a rogue weevil, and made it clear that he already knew about aliens. He then appeared outside the Hub with a fresh cup of coffee for Jack, and begged him to hire him. Third time proved lucky when Jack went with him to catch a pterodactyl that had come through the rift.

After a slightly hairy pursuit and capture, in which Ianto distracted the creature with a block of chocolate, Jack finally conceded and told Ianto to report for work the next day.
14. In the season finale, "Exit Wounds", we were initially led to believe that Captain John Hart was responsible for the destruction being wrought on Cardiff. It isn't until John takes an unwilling Jack back in time to 27AD that we found out the truth - that Jack's brother Gray was the real culprit. What was the reason he gave?

Answer: Jack let go of his hand during an alien invasion when they were children.

Gray was abducted as a child, when Jack accidentally let go of his hand while they were running from alien invaders. He was tortured and driven mad by his captivity, and grew to hate Jack, believing him to be solely responsible for his fate. When Captain John Hart found and rescued him, all Gray wanted was to take revenge on his brother for everything that had happened to him.
15. Again in "Exit Wounds", Gray had Captain John bury Jack alive two thousand years in the past, but that was not where Gray found Jack back in the present. Where was Jack found?

Answer: In a cryogenic unit in the Torchwood morgue

Jack turned up again in a cryogenic unit in the Torchwood morgue. When Gray queried how that was possible, we were shown a flashback telling us how Torchwood operatives found Jack buried in a twenty-foot grave in 1901, nineteen hundred years after being buried by Gray and John.

He then had them freeze him cryogenically for one hundred and seven years, programmed to wake up in time to stop Gray.
