Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Will decides to write a play about Julius Caesar, which episode of Caesar's career does he intend to focus on?

Answer: Invasion of Britain

Despite Kate pointing out a number of interesting events, including three marriages, numerous mistresses, conquering half the known world, crossing the Rubicon, becoming dictator for life and being stabbed to death by his best mates, Will decides that his play about Caesar will focus on the "short weekend break he took to Kent in 55 BC".

Although Kate thinks the play should be about Caesar's murder, focusing on assassination, regicide and betrayal, Will pragmatically points out that the Queen, often at risk of assassination, regicide and betrayal, might have an issue with this.
2. Acutely aware that Robert Greene, as Master of Revels, has the power to deny a licence to his play, how does Will ensure Greene will grant permission for "Julius Caesar" to be performed?

Answer: By only sending half the script

Sending the Master of Revels only half the script means the play appears to end with the assassination of Julius Caesar. Such an ending would seem seditious and an incitement to regicide. Greene therefore sees an opportunity to have Will imprisoned via the performance of the play, and so grants the licence for this reason.

It is only when Greene attempts to close the theatre during the first performance that Will reveals the subsequent second half of the play, which is the opposite of seditious and leads to Greene's public ridicule.
3. Burbage's company is auditioning for a new actor to replace Condell in the female lead roles, and casts a young boy named Toby. Toby is played by the daughter of which actor from Ben Elton's sitcom "The Young Ones"?

Answer: Adrian Edmondson

Beattie Edmondson is the second of three daughters of Adrian Edmondson and Jennifer Saunders. She followed in the footsteps of her parents by developing a career in comedy as part of a trio, initially named "Lady Garden" before assuming the moniker of "Birthday Girls".

She has also appeared in numerous TV series, including regular roles in Ben Elton's sitcom "The Wright Way" and Josh Widdecombe's self-titled sitcom, as well as appearing alongside her mother in "Jam & Jerusalem" and "Absolutely Fabulous".
4. Kate is concerned because, as a spinster, she has no independent status in law, and is worried that her potential inheritance from her mother could be at risk from unscrupulous men. She is therefore advised to marry and gain the protection of a husband. To whom does she eventually become engaged?

Answer: Toby

Although Marlowe persistently offers to marry her, Kate is reluctant to accept, on account of him being an "exploitative, opportunist, gold-digging rogue", which Marlowe believes makes him the perfect choice, as he accepts he is all these things. When Toby gets the lead female role in "Julius Caesar", Will asks Kate to give Toby acting lessons, and the pair become close.

While Toby is an hermaphrodite, and thus has his own boobingtons, he is legally male, and can thus offer Kate the legal protection of a husband, and so Kate asks Toby to marry her.
5. Marlowe remains in hiding having faked his own death. What does he do to alter his appearance?

Answer: Dyes his hair

Marlowe becomes a blond by using a dye made from gunpowder and lemon juice. With his new look, he further tries to persuade Kate of his suitability as a husband, believing the blond look makes him appear more sensitive and less gold-digging.
6. Marlowe and Bottom discuss going along to see Catholics being disemboweled, but to which notorious place of execution are they planning to go and watch?

Answer: Tyburn

Tyburn was a major site of public executions in London from the 16th to the 18th centuries. In addition to its famous gallows, known as the "Tyburn Tree", which was a major landmark in the area, from which criminals were hanged, felons could also be drawn and quartered, or burned at the stake.

At this time, executions were a popular form of entertainment for the masses, and the enthusiasm displayed by Marlowe and Bottom is representative of what is believed to have been the general feeling amongst the public.
7. Will learns that he is nominated in multiple categories at the new London Theatre Awards. Due to the scheduling, which important family celebration does Will decide to miss to attend?

Answer: The celebration of Hamnet's church confirmation

Will is excited at the prospect of the London Theatre Awards, largely because he believes he will win in every category as the majority of theatre companies have been performing outside London due to the plague, leaving his plays as almost the only ones still on in the capital. Anne is initially resentful of Will choosing the company of pampered luvvie-kissies over his family, but eventually realises the importance to Will, and surprises him by arriving at his London lodgings to accompany him to the event.
8. Marlowe learns that he is to receive a posthumous award at the London Theatre Awards. Keen to receive it in person, he adopts the identity of his own fictional brother. What name does he use?

Answer: Kurt

Kurt Marlowe is Kit's new plan as a method of reintroducing himself into society, as he misses going out and having fun. Kurt's first outing sees Kit take advantage of the situation when Anne has arrived to find Emilia Lanier (the "Dark Lady" of his smutty sonnets) turn up as Will's date for the night. Kit steps in claiming Emilia to be his own date and introducing himself to her as Kurt, by whom she is just as smitten as she was by Kit.
9. The London Theatre Awards is held at the Red Lion Theatre, but who serves as its host?

Answer: Will Kempe

In keeping with his character, Kempe uses his introductory monologue at the awards ceremony to pass a number of snide remarks about the pampered luvvie-kissies assembled in the room. His speech however goes down well with everyone except Will, who regards Kempe as "just being rude", and not "dry and edgy". Kempe thrives on reminding everyone he is big in Italy and has complete self-confidence despite the irritation he causes in everyone around him.
10. Will returns to Stratford to the news that his son Hamnet has died. To which illness has he succumbed?

Answer: Plague

Ben Elton wrote the story to include the plausible cause of Hamnet's death as plague. However, it is uncertain as to whether this was in fact the cause, as very little is known about the life of the real Hamnet. As we see on screen, Hamnet lived from 1585 to 1596.

He was the fraternal twin of his sister Judith, and William and Anne Shakespeare's only son. In "Upstart Crow", Hamnet was originally played by Sebastian Barker in Series 1, with the role taken over by Joe Willis in Series 2 and 3.
