Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fred and Barney are leaving "the girls" for a night of hedonistic abandonment. In what activity are they likely to engage?

Answer: Bowling

Did you realize that there were no "R" rated movies in 1961? The rating system had yet to be deployed, and in any event, no Hollywood movie could have qualified for an R rating. For Fred and Barney, sneaking out on their wives meant going out to bowl when they were supposed to be taking "the girls" to dinner.
2. Bret and Bart are engaged in a favorite Maverick family pastime. They are most likely doing what?

Answer: Playing poker

The lovable, humorous scoundrel role was a role that James Garner reprised repeatedly. The movies "The Americanization of Emily", "Support Your Local Sheriff" and "Support Your Local Gunfighter" come readily to mind. The Rockford character in the "Rockford Files" TV show seems somehow a bit more honest but still probably fits the pattern.
3. Kookie has just finished parking a car in the 77 Sunset Strip parking lot. Which of the following is he most likely to do next?

Answer: Comb his hair.

Gerald Lloyd Kookson III smoked only tobacco and would never stoop to petty theft. To my knowledge there wasn't a lot of use of the peace sign in 1960 or 1961; who needs a sign when you actually are at peace? Kookie did have a thing about his hair.
4. Wyatt Earp, played by Hugh O'Brian, has just walked into the saloon. Which action would be most characteristic of him?

Answer: Asking the bartender for a milk.

Wyatt was a milk drinkin' "peace officer" who engaged in gunplay only as a last resort. Some would argue that the real Wyatt Earp was little more than a racketeer, who might well have collected a little protection money from the bar tender. Would it be fair to ask what financial involvement, if any, the dairy industry had with the producers of the show?
5. Boris Badenov wants to kill Moose and Squirrel. He will likely try to accomplish it in what fashion?

Answer: He will use a bomb.

Boris was very partial to bombs. Scholarly analysis of the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show have always focused on linguistics (the word play) or the socio-political implications (culture and cold war). I believe that there is room for a psychoanalytic approach. Badanov clearly represents the Id. What could Fearless leader be if not the superego? Natasha Fatale's name suggests a death wish. Rocky has to be everyone's "inner child".
6. Ricky Nelson is at a dance. What are you likely to find him doing?

Answer: Standing on stage, guitar in hand singing about Mary Lou

The lyrics of one of Ricky's songs were as follows: 'Hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart; Sweet Mary Lou I'm so in love with you; I knew Mary Lou, we'd never part; so hello Mary Lou, goodbye heart.' This raises questions, questions like: Did it embarrass Ricky to sing a song like that? What, exactly, would be Ricky's chances on 'American Idol'?
7. Donna Reed's husband is called out at night to work. What will he be doing?

Answer: Providing medical care

Donna Reed's TV husband was a physician. Like Ricky Nelson, the "Reed" kids also had Top 40 hits. Shelley Fabares told us about Johnny Angel while her television brother sang about "My Dad".
8. The bad guys have burned down the victim's ranch house, driven off the cattle and taken his daughter captive. The town Sheriff is in cahoots with them. If this happens at the beginning of the show in which Richard Boone starred, what event might occur in the next scene?

Answer: The victim will receive a card in the mail on which is written "Have Gun Will Travel. Wire Paladin San Francisco."

The Carlton Hotel was the headquarters for Paladin. Kam Tong was an assistant.
9. Before certain contestants came on stage for the classic show, "What's My Line", what would Arlene Francis do?

Answer: Put on a mask.

On 'What's My Line?', contestants answered yes or no questions about their occupations. If the answer was yes the panelist continued questioning. If it was no the contestant earned $5. When the contestant was a celebrity, the panelists wore masks to prevent visual identification.
10. Despite admirably restraining sexual content and providing moral and generally happy endings, television writers favorably showcased two behaviors in the early 1960's that now account for at least one half of all deaths of people who die prior to reaching their life expectancy.

Answer: True

The first Surgeon General's report on smoking did not appear until 1963. Television alcoholics tended to be humorous and amiable like Otis on the 'Andy Griffith Show' or tragic and noble like Doc Holliday on Wyatt Earp.
