Count Vorontsov was interrogating Maria Choglokov who claimed that it was Catherine's idea for the affair. Russian Guards on Vorontzov's orders arrested Count Gregory Orlov. Count Orlov's brother Alexei announced he was going to Peterhof to fetch the new empress.

Vorontzov ordered them in the name of the Emperor to fire. Catherine told her men to hold their fire and galloped forward a bit. Catherine: "Any man who wants to shoot his Empress. Now is the time!" Vorontzov's men laid down their weapons and joined Catherine's side.

Peter had been killed by Gregory Orlov just earlier. Count Vorontsov had told Peter before he left for Prussia that Frederick owed him (Peter) much considering he ended the war that his aunt started. By the time Vorontsov arrived in Berlin, Peter was already dead and Catherine was now Empress.
