Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the actors on "Friends" unfortunately decides to whiten his teeth before going out on a first date with a girl he's had a crush on for some time?

Answer: Ross

This takes place in season six of the series. Ross is so anxious to impress the girl that, instead of following the directions for whitening his teeth and leaving the product on for the required time, he leaves it on for an entire day instead. The result is impossibly whitened teeth, so much so that he looks like a neon sign every time he smiles. He subsequently spends the early part of the date with the girl hiding his mouth behind his hand, and various other objects, whenever he speaks. All seems to be proceeding successfully at first. Then, however, the girl decides to turn out all the lights in her apartment except for a UV blacklight. Ross, not realising the effect this would have on those dazzlers, thinks it is now safe to smile in the dark at her. What happens next is that we can barely see Ross and the girl at all except for dark shapes, but when Ross smiles at the girl, his teeth glow whitely and eerily in the dark, scaring the wits out of her. Another unsuccessful date chalked up to the hilarious Ross.

"Friends" ran for ten seasons, from 1994 to 2004. This extremely popular show starred Jennifer Aniston as Rachel, Courtney Cox as Monica, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe, Matt LeBlanc as Joey, Matthew Perry as Chandler and David Schwimmer as Ross.
2. When Rachel, Chandler and Ross are trying to carry Ross's new lounge up a flight of stairs that change direction half way, what is the word that Ross keeps shouting out to the other two?

Answer: "Pivot!"

This can be seen in season five of the show. How a single episode devoted in part to getting a new lounge into an apartment turned out to be so comical is hard to explain, but extremely funny it was. "Piiiivot!" Ross shouts periodically to his exasperated friends as all three find themselves stuck half way up those flight of stairs. Chandler of course finds himself squashed against the wall, with a corner of the lounge in dire danger of ruining his manhood, but "Piiiivot!" is all the sympathy he receives from Ross for his pains.

The sorry ending to this tale is that Ross finds his new lounge completely jammed on those stairs, and his only solution to this problem is to cut it in half. He then returns the dissected couch to the store from where he bought it and tries to get a refund of his money.
3. This laughter evoking episode in season five involves Ross following Joey's advice, following his purchase of a new pair of trousers to wear out on a date. What sort of pants were they?

Answer: Leather pants

This was so funny I laughed till the tears rolled down my face. Ross sets off happily for his date thinking he looks really trendy. The first thing that goes wrong however is that, when he sits on his date's couch, the pants make a sound as though he's passed wind.

This so flusters Ross that he starts to perspire - which makes the leather pants begin to shrink. After a short while the tightening pants begin to cause him enormous discomfort, and he makes an excuse to use the girl's bathroom. There he pulls the pants half way down and fans himself off, but to his horror, when he tries to pull the pants back up, he finds they're stuck around his thighs. Desperately he phones Joey for advice, which is, of course, a huge mistake.

Some time later Ross staggers out of the girl's bathroom, weeping in frustration, with his pants still half way up, and covered in talcum powder and body lotion.
4. Season three presents a funny episode in which, to his horror, Chandler's male boss develops a habit of doing what?

Answer: Slapping Chandler on the backside

This is another screamer from "Friends". Chandler, until he settles down with Monica later in the series, seems to struggle a little with issues of his masculinity. When his current boss develops a habit of slapping him on the backside to congratulate him for jobs well done, Chandler begins to feel very threatened.

His colleagues also begin to feel jealous because their own backsides aren't being given this mateship seal of approval. It's very amusing to see the play of emotions across Chandler's face as he realises another slap is on the way, and the desperate methods he tries to avoid this contact - to no avail of course. And it progresses from there in typical Chandler fashion.
5. Season four gives us an episode where all the friends politely listen to Ross's playing on the keyboard, a skill he's dreadful at. What does he call his musical creations?

Answer: Wordless sound poems

Ross hasn't played his keyboard since he was at college. Fortunately. He's really terrible at it. He makes up his own creation that are comprised of various sound effects and little music at all, and has special killingly-funny facial expressions to accompany each piece.

The friends all try to listen to his work politely, without hurting his feelings, but with little success. Only Phoebe, as one would expect of that zany character, thinks they're marvelous, and, unfortunately, encourages Ross to perform at the coffee shop. To everyone's relief, Ross, who plays as terribly as ever, so impresses Phoebe alone that she decides she can never play again after such greatness - so Ross sacrifices his "new career" to allow Phoebe to continue with hers.
6. In season 6, episode 7, Rachel tries to avoid being seen with Phoebe during which form of physical exercise in Central Park?

Answer: Jogging

This is so funny. After Rachel and Phoebe have started sharing the same apartment, the girls go on a jogging run through the park together. Together, that is, until Rachel sees Phoebe's peculiar running style and is mortified to be seen with her. This style looks a little like someone running away from a swarm of bees and trying to brush them off at the same time. Legs, arms and head go in all different directions. Phoebe, who says her style makes her free and happy, is hurt by Rachel's rejection and runs off. Rachel eventually finds her, apologises, and decides to try Phoebe's unique jog for herself. "You're right, Phoebes, I feel wonderful!" she calls in delight as, running backwards, she turns to face Phoebe. Swinging back round again, with a happy smile on her face, she runs smack bang - into a horse.
7. At the beginning of the last season, what does Ross admire so much about Monica that he decides to get one of his own?

Answer: Spray on tan

And once again, with Ross, everything goes wrong. He goes to the spray on tanning parlour to have the tan done, and orders a double spray of it to make sure he looks super fit and tanned. However, he completely fails to understand the directions he has to follow.

Not only once, but several times. This is an incredibly funny scene. Ross glumly turns back up at Monica's apartment looking like a badly seared steak on the front half of his body, but his normal pale shade on the reverse. The beauty of this show is that the simplest everyday happenings which most other people sail through on an everyday basis, always go completely haywire in "Friends".
8. Season 9 sees the friends traveling to Barbados to listen to Ross give a speech. What happens to Monica's hair here?

Answer: It frizzes up like a giant afro in the humidity

Nobody hears a word of Ross's speech here of course because a tropical thunderstorm happens along. The unfortunate result of Monica joining her brother for this jaunt to the Caribbean is that the humidity begins to play havoc with her long dark hair. It frizzes up higher and higher around her small face until she looks as though she has the worst afro hairstyle ever devised.

After being informed she looks like Diana Ross, she tries to fix the problem by having her hair plaited into cornrows interlaced with seashells - which everyone hates.

It doesn't stop there of course. Monica subsequently becomes trapped when her new hairstyle is caught in the shower curtain.
9. After Joey has moved out of Chandler's apartment in season two, Chandler takes in a new room mate who turns out to be rather peculiar. What is his name?

Answer: Eddie

Eddie, to put it simply, is a loose cannon. Played by Adam Goldberg to perfection, Eddie is prone to violent fits of rage at the most peculiar things, really strange behaviour at other times, and complete memory loss at other times, none of which is witnessed by anyone but Chandler.

The most amusing aspect of all this is that Chandler is terrified of him, as only Chandler can be. One particularly funny part in this episode takes place in the middle of the night when Chandler wakes up to see Eddie sitting by his bed staring at him silently and intently. Chandler's reaction is absolutely hilarious.
10. In the last season, Monica and Rachel decide to throw a bachelorette party for Phoebe before her wedding. At the last minute they hire a male stripper. Which unlikely looking actor plays him?

Answer: Danny DeVito

Because Monica and Phoebe didn't realise until the last minute that Phoebe was expecting a male stripper at her party, they hurriedly book the only one they can find in the phone book, sight unseen. Hilariously so, this turns out to be Danny DeVito. He plays the role of a male stripper, Officer Goodbody. Phoebe isn't a bit impressed at her anything but muscular and well built substitute, and insults him. Officer Goodbody promptly starts to cry, and on it goes from there. What was to be a raunchy girl's celebrations with a delectable male stripper concludes with everybody drinking tea and munching happily having tea on sandwiches instead.
