Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where can you find a Pineco?

Answer: In a tree

Pineco live in trees in the "forest" areas, as opposed to the "mountain" areas. They are extremely rare, and you'll have to sift through hordes of Caterpie or Weedle (depending on which version you're playing) and maybe even a few Exeggcute. Once you find one, put it to sleep. It is prone to self-destructing and can be quite fragile when trying to catch.
2. What is a swarming Pokémon?

Answer: A Pokémon that is quite rare where it lives, but can become quite abundant on occasion if you traded phone numbers with the correct trainers

Take Snubbull, for example. He can be found on Route 38 only and is extremely rare. But if you trade phone numbers with the guy named Chad, he may just call you up, explaining how there are Snubbull everywhere, and that it would be a good time to catch one.
3. Which cave is Snorlax blocking the entrance to when you find it?

Answer: Diglett's Cave

All passages to Western Kanto are blocked. The only one you can do anything about is the one Snorlax is blocking. Wake him up using the radio. Once out of the way, you will be able to go through Diglett's Cave, which takes you to Route 2, just south of Pewter City. Mt. Moon, Viridian City, Pallet Town, Cinnabar Island, and Seafoam Island are only accessible by going through Diglett's cave first.
4. Which of the following Pokémon is not half flying?

Answer: Haunter

Crobat is poison/flying, Yanma is bug/flying, and Skarmory is steel/flying. Haunter, is ghost/poison, and although you may think that would give him certain immunities, he is actually affected quite harshly by ground moves.
5. How many Pokémon evolve by being traded while they hold a certain item?

Answer: Six

The six Pokémon are: Scyther (into Scizor), Onix (into Steelix), Porygon (into Porygon 2), Seadra (into Kingdra), Slowpoke (into Slowking), and Poliwhirl (into Politoed). To evolve them, attach the specific item needed and then trade with a friend. When your friend gets the Pokémon, it will evolve before you can continue your trading procedures.
6. What is the name of the ship that sails between Vermilion City and Oivine City?

Answer: S.S. Aqua

Replacing the S.S. Anne from "Red/Blue/Yellow", you can now actually sail on the ship. There are trainers you can battle, and items to collect, such as the Metal Coat. You cannot fly between Kanto and Johto, so the only way is walking (which takes a long time), the train (which is the fastest), and the ship, which will take you between the regions and give you a chance to gain more experience points.
7. Which Pokémon can be seen clinging to the wing of a Mantine?

Answer: Remoraid

You don't actually get a Remoraid when you catch a Mantine, but it acknowledges it in the Pokédex, and you can see it in the picture. Mantine is "Gold"-only so "Silver" players will have to trade for one.
8. Where can the Move Deleter be found?

Answer: Blackthorn City

The Move Deleter is a nice person. Before, when one of your Pokémon learned a new move, you could not erase HM moves to make room for them. Now, you can get rid of HM moves to make room for those other attacks you wanted. Blackthorn City is the last City in Johto, so it will take you a while before you can delete those moves.
9. How many baby Pokémon are there?

Answer: Eight

A baby Pokémon is a Pokémon that can only be acquired through the mating of two parent Pokémon. Each baby Pokémon comes from an egg. Also, one of the parents has to be a certain Pokémon to get a certain baby Pokémon. So, the eight baby Pokémon are Pichu (from Pikachu), Smoochum (from Jynx), Cleffa (from Clefairy), Elekid (from Electabuzz), Igglybuff (from Jiggglypuff), Tyrogue (from Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop), Magby (from Magmar), and Togepi (from Togetic). You can actually get a Tyrogue from the Karate Master after you beat him and a Togepi egg from the beginning of the game, but to get new ones, you'll need to breed them, which brings me to my last point.

The defining feature of a baby Pokémon is that they cannot breed. This is what separates baby Pokémon from other Pokémon such as Eevee. You can only get new Eevees through breeding, but you can also use an Eevee as a parent Pokémon; you cannot breed a Pichu to get another Pichu.
10. What do the brothers in Goldenrod Tunnel do?

Answer: Make your Pokémon like you more

These brothers are good for when you want to evolve a Pokémon through tameness. The older of the two brothers charges more for his haircuts, but makes the Pokémon like you more. The younger brother does lesser jobs for a smaller fee. The older brother is out on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, while the younger brother gives haircuts every Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday.
11. Which special building can be found in Ecruteak City?

Answer: The Dance Hall

In the Dance Hall, there are five trainers on the stage. Each has one Pokémon, and each Pokémon is an Eevee evolution, one of each. Defeat all five trainers, and the man off the stage will compliment you, saying how watching you beat those trainers was like a dance, and then he'll give you HM03 (Surf).
12. Which city in Johto has a department store?

Answer: Goldenrod City

You can buy a lot of items in the department store, such as the state raisers like Carbos, and Calcuim. But all the normal items, such as Potions, and Pokéballs, are not that advanced. Eventually, you'll get to Blackthorn where they sell Ultraballs, and you'll rarely ever shop in this building again, especially after you've been to Celadon City, which also has a department store, but it's much later in the game, and is stocked with more advanced items.
13. Which Pokémon does not evolve be trading it while it holds a Metal Coat?

Answer: Porygon

If you equip Scizor or Onix with a Metal Coat and trade them, the'll evolve into their respective forms. Porygon, on the other hand, needs the Upgrade which can be acquired at the Silph Co building in Saffron City.
14. What is the ballsmith's name?

Answer: Kurt

Kurt, the ballsmith, lives in Azelea Town, at the southern most point of Johto. The first time you meet him, he'll race off to stop Team Rocket's operation at Slowpoke Well (just east of Azelea Town). He'll knock down the guard (who wouldn't let you pass), opening the way for you to go in and finish off what he started.

After everything's been cleared up, Kurt will start making balls for you from the Apricorns you give him. It'll take a day to make each ball. There are seven different Apricorns that can be found on trees, just like berries: White, Black, Peach, Blue, Red, Yellow, and Green.
15. How many floors are in the lighthouse in Olivine City?

Answer: Six

Although there are only six floors, there are still puzzles that force to sort of backtrack. You have to fall down a hole into a hallway that you could otherwise not get into, and after that, take a different set of ladders up to the top. At the top, you'll find Jasmine.

She's the gym leader of Olivine City, but will not battle anyone until the sick Pokémon at the top of the lighthouse is healed. She'll explain to you that there's a pharmacy on Cianwood Island. You are to go there, grab the Secret Potion, which is stronger than normal potions.

It'll heal the sick Pokémon instantly.
16. How is the woman outside the Cianwood Island Gym related to the gym leader, Chuck?

Answer: She's his wife

She is happy that you beat her husband. "He was getting fat, anyway" she'll say. As a reward, she'll give you HM 02 (Fly), which, once taught to one of your Pokémon, will enable you to travel to any city or town you have already visited.
17. Which place is north of Mahogany Town?

Answer: Lake of Rage

This is where Team Rocket is forcing the Magikarp to evolve. In the middle of the lake is the famous Red Gyrados. It's one of a kind, so try to catch it. Whether you knock it out, or capture it, you'll also get the Red Scale, which can be traded for an Exp. Share from Mr. Pokémon, who lives just north of Cherrygrove Town.
18. Which is not a Rocket type?

Answer: Admin

Grunts have a basic black uniform. Executives have a similar uniform, but with a stripe on it. Rocket leaders (Giovanni, whom you don't see in "Gold/Silver") have two stripes on their uniform. There are no Rocket Admins, but there are Team Aqua Admins and Team Magma Admins from the "Ruby/Sapphire" games.
19. Who will Tyrogue evolve into if his defense is higher than his attack?

Answer: Hitmonchan

Tyrogue will evolve into Hitmonchan if his defense is higher than his attack when he evolves. He'll evolve into Hitmonlee if attack is higher than defense, and into Hitmontop if they're the same.
20. Which is not a time of day?

Answer: Evening

Certain Pokémon come out only during certain times of the day and others are more abundant during a certain time of day than others. Morning last between 4:01 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Day is between 10:01 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and night, as you've probably already figured out, is between 6:01 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.
21. Which Pokémon is "Gold" only?

Answer: Ursaring

Spinarak, Ariados, Gligar, Mantine, Ursaring, and its devolved form, Teddiursa are all "Gold" only. Ursaring is a massive normal bear. It has good attack and defense, but lacks in everything else.
22. Which Pokémon is "Silver" only?

Answer: Ledian

Ledyba, Ledian, Phanpy, Donphan, Delibird, and Skarmory are the six "Silver" only Pokémon. Ledian is the evolved for of Ledyba. It's fairly weak, but is found early in the game, making it easy for you to raise it the way you want, which could give you the advantage you need against your opponent.
23. How many Pokémon that swarm are at least half water?

Answer: Three

Pokémon that swarm rarely come out, but every once and a while, if you traded phone numbers with the right trainers, they'll call you up saying a particular Pokémon is abundant in their area. This will only last for a while, so go to catch your rare Pokémon as fast as you can. Remoraid and Marill are both pure water while Quilfish is water/poison.

The other three swarming Pokémon are Yanma (bug/flying), Dunsparce (normal) and Snubbull (also normal).
24. Which is not one of the starting Pokémon?

Answer: Mareep

Again, there's the Rock/Paper/Scissors trio of starting Pokémon. Grass (Chikorita) beats water (Totodile), water beats fire (Cyndaquil), and fire beats grass. You get a choice of any three, but whichever one you pick, your rival will pick the one with the type advantage against yours.
25. What do you win if all numbers of one of your Pokémon's ID number match those announced on the Lucky Number Show?

Answer: A Master Ball

The chances of even one number matching any of those any of your Pokémon may have in their ID numbers is rare. All Pokémon you catch have the same ID number, but your friend's Pokémon will have different ones. Trade with your friends to increase the chances of winning.
