Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is unusual about this "CSI" game?

Answer: It doesn't feature Gil Grissom

Gil Grissom, along with Sara Sidle and Warwick Brown, left the show after nearly 10 years. If you haven't seen Seasons 8 and 9 I won't tell you why and spoil the surprise. (Anyway, I can't - I haven't seen them myself!)
2. Which cast member of the film "The Matrix" features in this game?

Answer: Laurence Fishburne

He plays the new CSI team member Dr. Raymond Langston who joined in Season 9. He used to work at a hospital before being spotted by Grissom and encouraged to join CSI. Grissom had seen Langston piece together evidence about one of the hospital staff, and he rightly guessed Langston would be a valuable addition to the team.
3. Which of the following features in this game is NOT new to "CSI" computer games?

Answer: PDA

The PDA was introduced in the previous "CSI" game, "Hard Evidence". It was a very good idea, it combines everything one needs while out in the field. The three other choices are all brand new in "Deadly Intent", and even better ideas. I love the way one can disprove suspects' statements by showing them new evidence and watch their faces fall! But if you produce the wrong evidence, your CSI partner will take you outside for a...er, chat. Humiliating...but I admit it does make the game more realistic.
4. What is the name of the police detective who is soon retiring from the Las Vegas PD?

Answer: Juarice Briggs

After more than thirty years this respected detective is leaving the force. Jim Brass is off to her retirement party in case #1, we meet her in case #3 and she re-appears in other cases. In the last case her memories from thirty years on the force could help solve a new crime.
However, she is not the nicest of detectives one could wish to work alongside. Raymond Langston comments after we help the rude woman solve a crime in the bonus round of case #3 "Hopefully this will bring her one step closer to retirement..."
5. Which of the following is NOT a reason case #1 is called "Broken Hearted"?

Answer: Some cardiac surgery went wrong

The police were called when a corpse was found in a motel wearing a wedding dress. Captain Brass and Nick Stokes commented this was a short wedding, even for Vegas. Nick helps one uncover the evidence and we eventually learn the woman and the murderer were strippers who dressed up for a customer trying to cope with his divorce.

The two women were also lovers some years ago. This is actually the third "CSI" game in which Nick works on a case involving a woman-woman love affair (the lucky so-and-so!).
6. How does one identify mysterious chemicals in this game?

Answer: By Comparing Colours

Another enjoyable new feature of this game is identifying chemicals found at crime scenes. It's like solving puzzles. One has to re-arrange different colours, look for patterns and compare other samples. (I certainly hope none of you would taste strange chemicals to identify them, even if you work for the police!) Identifying DNA in this game is done pretty much in the same way, again making the game so realistic.
7. What is unusual about the confessed murderer Horace Willingham in case #2?

Answer: He didn't really murder anyone

Not one but two employees of a Kung Fu sports' league are murdered. The referee from the previous championship match, and later the ex-champ himself (which rules him out as a suspect). The murderer had left hairs at both murders but the DNA does not match that of Horace the manager.

But it doesn't match that of Tina the other suspect either, so everyone is puzzled. Until it turns out Tina had a hair-transplant years ago. Horace was in love with Tina and lied to protect her. Love Hath No Greater...
8. Riley Adams is the "CSI" character one works with in Case #2.

Answer: False

One actually works with the unforgettable humourist and former lab-technician Greg Sanders. Though one does meet Riley in this particular case. She is trying to solve another crime and asks for help identifying a tricky DNA sample (this is a bonus round).

She replaced Sara Sidle who left the "CSI" series, but she is just as good-looking. She also tends to flirt with male colleagues when the opportunity arises (not that I'm complaining).
9. In case #3 what new LVPD machine is used for the very first time?

Answer: Document Analyzer

A poor woman has drowned in the spa at a rehab centre - probably murdered. She was a TV show hostess with a drinking problem. The suspects are her husband, her lover (a fellow rehab guest), and a TV rival. It turns out the husband and rival had conspired to get her drunk so her rehabilitation would fail and she'd give up and leave TV to have kids.

They didn't know that same night her lover would drug the booze and then drown her. Catherine Willows is eager to have an excuse to test out the new Document Analyzer.

The murderer has answers for every bit of evidence found. But using the Analyzer on the altered divorce papers found in his room reveals a secret. His own marriage broke up years ago, and he blamed the TV show's couple for revealing on air he was unfaithful to his wife. Apparently it hadn't occurred to him that might happen, even though that was the whole point of the couple's show...
10. Since Dr. Gil Grissom has left "CSI" who has taken his place on the night-shift as head of forensics?

Answer: Catherine Willows

Captain Brass was the original head of forensics but was promoted to Head of Homicide in the double-episode TV pilot. (Holly Gribbs was the new CSI who was killed in the same episode, and Grissom took Brass' place). Catherine often acted like the 2nd-in-command though she didn't hold any seniority till later - but no one complained.

In "Deadly Intent" her advice is useful even if she's not there i.e. she sends emails if one seems stuck.
11. How many attempts (successful or unsuccessful) to murder the victim are discovered in case #4, and how many people turn out to be (deliberately) responsible?

Answer: Two Attempts, One Perpetrator

Andrew, a wife-hitting fire-eater, is found dead in his practice workspace. His lungs full of CO gas. He was working next to a portable generator but one ascertains that couldn't have given off enough smoke to kill him. The landlord is found to have hastily fixed a gas leak after discovering the body, but he wasn't the murderer - just tried to save his own neck in case his negligence was blamed.

But the leak was in fact caused by Andrew's stepson Lyle. Lyle also tampered with his violent stepfather's cancer medication to ensure an early death.

He later decided to sabotage the gas-pipe too because Andrew had thoughtlessly pushed over Lyle's pregnant mother. Luckily the baby was born all right, but Andrew pretended nothing had happened and that enraged Lyle.
12. In case #5 (and only in case #5) what does the acronym "CSI" stand for?

Answer: Crime Scene Impersonator

The murder victim is a well-known singing female impersonator called Marcelle (his real name's Floyd Collister) - or so Jim Brass and Catherine Willows think. It turns out to be another man pretending to be Floyd Collister, who pretends to be a woman for a living. As Catherine says, "Just what we need: an impersonator of an impersonator".
13. Why does retiring police detective Briggs give consent for her home to be searched?

Answer: She doesn't- we need a warrant

In 1975 several gay men were murdered by a serial killer known as "The Barbur Street Boozer" - so named because the killer forced his or her victims to drink whiskey until they died (they were tied up). The latest corpse was murdered on stage last night in exactly the same way.

But it turns out not to be Floyd Collister at all, but his business partner Wallace Biginowski. The real Marcelle/Floyd is found hiding in Biginowski's home, terrified the killer will learn they killed the wrong woman...well, man. Reading old 1975 case notes reveals Marcelle was actually a suspect in the Barbur St murders.

As of last night, Marcelle is the only suspect still alive.
14. Which regular cast member from the TV show does NOT appear in the final case?

Answer: They all do

One is initially assigned with Catherine the boss. But as the case gets stranger and stranger other CSIs come along and offer to help. First Ray Langston who conducts some suspect interviews, then Nick, Greg and Riley as well. They agree it's sad Detective Briggs of all people seems to be hiding evidence. What has gotten into her?
15. Who turns out to be the murderer in the final case (the latest murder I mean, not the 1975 ones)?

Answer: Juarice Briggs

Jim Brass cannot believe this. One of the most respected detectives he has ever known took the law into her own hands and killed someone! She admits she was engaged to one of the 1975 victims (and obviously not happy he wasn't 100% heterosexual). For 35 years she has wanted revenge on the Barbur St Boozer and several nights ago she was convinced it was Marcelle. Why? A week ago she saw him yelling at Gary in the club and threatening to pour booze down his throat. That was when she knew the murderer was Floyd Collister after all.
There's just one problem, though: Briggs killed the wrong man. She is horrified when they tell her; all the arrogance rushes out of her face. "Oh no!" she cries and buries her face in her hands.
This is a good illustration about why you should never take the law into your own hands: you might spill innocent blood by mistake. Briggs is devastated. She realises too late her 35-year lust for revenge has gone horribly wrong.
But at least she helps track down other evidence that allows CSI to solve the 1975 murders after all. Briggs was right: the Barbur St Boozer was none other than Floyd Collister aka Marcelle. Collister keeps insisting he's been dead since '75 and Marcelle has no blood on her hands. Somehow I don't think the police will accept that excuse...
