Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chronologically, the Ruins are which stage of the game?

Answer: Third

The Ruins are the third in line after Donkey Kong and Diddy make their way through their home area-- the Jungle-- and the Beach. While the area contains elements of both previous environments, much of the stage sends the protagonists through the ruins proper. This may seem a bit confusing; there's no real people to build such massive ruins...but here we are.
2. What is the name of the first level in the Ruins stage?

Answer: Wonky Waterway

Emerging from the Beach, the first stage of the Ruins, Wonky Waterway (3-1) takes Donkey Kong and Diddy directly into the ruins proper by sending them along the course of an aqueduct. The level forces the Kongs to gain access to the temple by pulling vines and pressing buttons.

This mentality of gaining access should stick in your mind; a fair number of the later levels in this stage involve solving little puzzles and finding access to sealed-off compartments of the Ruins.
3. When visiting Button Bash (3-2), the level's name refers to which of these?

Answer: Smashing buttons found in the level

Button Bash sends the Kongs deeper into the ruins, this time to a section involving large, red buttons. To get through the level, Donkey and Diddy need to navigate the complex inner-workings of the temple setting by launching themselves, in barrels, toward buttons placed on the walls. Doing so allows access to further barrels and the like.

This level is also the first to feature hummingbird enemies which don't hurt to jump on, but will fly into DK to do damage.
4. How many ships will Donkey Kong destroy in Mast Blast (3-3)?

Answer: Three

In this level of the game, the Kongs begin in the Ruins and make their way back to the sandy beaches on the edge of the island, taking the fight back out into the sunshine to destroy an armada. To complete the level, Donkey Kong and Diddy have to shoot out onto the ships, one at a time, to climb through their holds and up along the masts to destroy them.

There are three ships in total, each with their own secrets, before you can reach the end barrel and the crow's nest of the third ship.
5. Which of the following enemies will appear in Damp Dungeon (3-4)?

Answer: Sharks

Damp Dungeon is the only level that requires a key to access in the Ruins; you can get the key, as usual, by visiting Cranky's Shop and handing over some Banana Coins. If you choose to access it, Damp Dungeon is a water-logged section of the ruins and it contains a series of wheels operated by the rushing, unswimmable waters below.

In addition, those waters will be populated by a large shark seeking monkey blood.
6. The biters found in Itty Bitty Biters (3-5) appear in three colours. Which is not one of them?

Answer: Green

The biters, known as Toothberries and Cageberries, are small creatures with a penchant for chewing on passers-by. They'll break through statues and emerge from hidden panels in the ruin walls to do so. Cageberries, which often appear in spiked cages on narrow platforms, can be pounded into the ground and used to help the Kongs reach higher-up spots. Since you can visit this level straight after Mast Blast, you will need to reenter the ruins via the beach.
7. Does Rambi appear during Temple Topple (3-6)?

Answer: Yes

Rambi's only level in the Ruins stage, Temple Topple is the final platforming level in the Ruins' six-pack. In this one, the whole place seems to come down around the Kongs, and the only way out is on the back of Rambi. Using Rambi's strength and spiky nose, they can charge through barriers to escape the ruins and, precariously, navigate the pillars outside to reach the end barrel.

This is the second of only four Rambi-centric levels in "Donkey Kong Country Returns".
8. How many levels, at the least, must be completed to reach the boss stage in the Ruins?

Answer: Four

No matter what, to get to the boss, Stu, you need to complete four levels. The first two will grant you access to Cranky's Shop where you can purchase a key, and then you can access level 3-4 (Damp Dungeon) from the first level to skip over some of the later ones.

As such, your route would lead you through 3-1, 3-2, 3-4, and 3-6. Alternately, you would complete five levels by going the long way, avoiding 3-4 to complete 3-3 and 3-5.
9. Shifty Smashers (3-K), the bonus level of the Ruins, contains absolutely no enemies.

Answer: False

While Shifty Smashers contains much less in the way of enemies than normal, it does contain a small handful of armored Tiki foes partway through. The rest of the stage gets its difficulty from the complex structures which shift around from within. The Kings are required to slip between the cracks, literally, as gold blocks move around the stage in clear patterns, only providing enough space to move with proper timing.

The White Orb becomes possession of the Kongs at the end of the level.
10. Stu, the boss found at the end of the Ruins area, is fought in a level known by what alliterative name?

Answer: Ruined Roost

Stu is actually a large bird protected by, first, an egg, and then subsequently a large orb of armor. This makes Stu very bottom-heavy and, as such, he uses a number of bombs to fight the Kongs from above. To beat Stu, you need to toss half a dozen of the bombs back at him, cracking his armor and rendering him defenseless in the process. Once Stu is without protection it won't take long to send him...erm...flying.
