quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Opponent: Nincada. Purely based on type match-ups, what would be the best Pokemon to send out against it?

Answer: Finneon

Nincada is the dual type Bug/Ground. In this case, Finneon would be the best choice, being the Water type.

Shinx would be the worst choice out of the four, since Electric attacks can not hit Ground types.

Both Grimer and Makuhita are at a disadvantage, as Poison and Fighting type moves are weak against Ground and Bug Pokemon, respectively.
2. Opponent: Stunky. You send out a Vulpix. What move would be the most effective?

Answer: Dig

Although Fire Spin does give a same-type attack bonus, it would still not do as much damage as Dig would have, as Fire Spin would receive a x1.5 boost, whereas Dig gets x2.

Since Stunky is a dual type Poison/Dark, Extrasensory would have no effect.

Iron Tail would receive no boost in attack, neither by STAB nor type match-up.
3. Opponent: Umbreon, holding a Chesto berry. You send out a Vileplume. What move would be the safest to use in this case? (Hint: consider abilities)

Answer: Swagger

Swagger, to inflict confusion, is the best move to use here. Stun Spore, according to Umbreon's ability Synchronize, will also affect yourself. Sleep Powder is not as effective because of Umbreon's Chesto berry, which wakes it up from sleep. Spore itself can not be learned by Vileplume though it would have the same affect as Sleep Powder.
4. Opponent: Exploud. Which Pokemon and move should you use against it?

Answer: Rampardos, Screech

Although it does no damage, Screech is the only move given that can actually affect Exploud because of Rampardos's ability, Mold Breaker. Exploud's ability, Soundproof, prevents all sound-based moves, but since Mold Breaker prevents the opponent's ability, Screech can be used.

The other three Pokemon's moves are sound-based as well, but as Soundproof would still be in effect, nothing would happen.
5. Opponent: Wigglytuff. In order to prevent Wigglytuff's ability, what Pokemon should be sent out?

Answer: Starmie

Wigglytuff's ability is Cute Charm, which has a chance of infatuating the opponent when they use a physical move. Starmie would be the best choice because it is genderless, and immune to attraction.
6. Opponent: Stantler. You sent out Rotom. You used a move, but Stantler used Me First and scored a super-effective hit. What move did you use?

Answer: Thief

The move Me First takes the opponent's attack and uses it against them with 1.5 times the power. In this case, since Rotom is a dual type Electric/Ghost, Thief is the only move that could score a super-effective hit.

Shock Wave would be not very effective, as Rotom has a resistance to Electric-type moves.

Return would not hit Rotom at all because Return is a Normal-type move.

Toxic cannot trigger Me First at all because it does not deal direct damage.
7. Opponent: Kecleon. Which of the following Pokemon will score a super-effective hit every time on it if the Pokemon's moves are used in the order given?

Answer: Vibrava (Rock Smash, Gust, Rock Tomb, Sand Tomb)

Kecleon's ability is Color Change, and so it will change its type to the last move used on it. Therefore, each move should be super-effective on the type of move preceeding it. Of the above movesets, Vibrava is the only one with this condition (Fighting, Flying, Rock, Ground).

Croconaw's moveset reads Ice Fang followed by Crunch, and Dark-type moves are not super-effective against Ice types.

Both Nuzleaf and Ledian's movesets are flawed because of the first moves in them. The attacks Strength and Cosmic Punch are surprisingly of the Normal type.
8. Opponent: Unown. You send out Gardevoir. If the four attacks below are Gardevoir's moveset, what should you use to render Unown completely useless?

Answer: Imprison

Imprison would be the best choice here. This attack prevents the opponent using any move known by the user, and since the only attack Unown know is Hidden Power, and Gardevoir knows it as well, Unown is completely shut down.

Memento and Grudge only take effect if the user faints.
9. Opponent: Bronzong. It uses Trick Room. What Pokemon should be out at this time in order to attack before Bronzong? (Assume all Pokemon have their base stats)

Answer: Magcargo

The move Trick Room allows the slowest Pokemon to attack first for five turns. Bronzong's base speed stat is 35. Of these Pokemon, the only one to have their speed lower than this is Macargo, at a base speed stat of 30.
10. Opponent: Metagross. You sent out Toxicroak, whose ability Anticipation made it shudder. Given that Metagross cannot learn any OHKO moves, which Pokemon would have the best type resistance of ANY move Toxicroak may have had detected?

Answer: Skarmory

Toxicroak is the dual type Poison/Fighting, and so the only move types that could set off its Anticipation are Ground, Flying, and Psychic type moves, all of which can be learned by Metagross. Of these Pokemon, Skarmory, a dual type Steel/Flying, is the only one to have a resistance to all three types.

Bastiodon, Magnezone, and Aggron all have a resistance to Flying and Psychic moves, but have a x4 weakness to Ground-type moves.

Incidentally, all four Pokemon can have the Sturdy ability, however, since Metagross cannot learn any OHKO moves, this ability is rendered useless.
