Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How do you get twenty eight p-wings?

Answer: Beat the game

After you defeat Bowser, the credits will roll. At the end, you get a message saying "The End". Start the game again (do not reset), and you will have twenty eight P-Wings in your inventory. The only requirement to get these wings is for you to defeat the game.
2. In the intro, Mario looks up as a turtle shell comes down on him. Is this sprite of Mario looking up present anywhere else in the game?

Answer: No

In the intro, this is the only sprite that does not occur elsewhere in the game. In the end sequence there are some additional sprites not present elsewhere: the Koopa laughing at your statue, on of the fireballs of Bowser, and the Goomba on its side.
3. What is the maximum number of anchors you can get in this game in one play through?

Answer: Six

Three anchors are available in a White Mushroom House in Worlds 2, 4, and 6. If you use the three warp whistles to play World 6 an additional three times, you can pick up three additional anchors, making a grand total of six anchors.
4. How do you get a music box to put the Hammer Bros. to sleep?

Answer: Princess Peach gives you one in a letter

There are only two ways to get a music box. Princess Peach will give you one in a letter, or some of the Hammer Bros. on the overworld map will give you one.
5. Occasionally card games will open up on the overworld map. How many different patterns are there in the card game?

Answer: Eight

Once you get eighty thousand points a card match game opens up. If you mismatch twice the game ends. After mismatching twice, it takes an additional twenty thousand points to have the card game appear. The second time, the card game will be where you left off at.
6. To open up the secret White Mushroom House, there are seven levels, one per world, that you have to collect a certain amount of coins. Which of the following is NOT one of the levels that you can open up a White Mushroom House with?

Answer: 4-3

One level in each world requires you to collect a certain amount of coins to get either a P-Wing or an Anchor.

World 1
Level: 1-4
Coins: 44
Prize: P-Wing

World 2
Level: 2-2
Coins: 30
Prize: Anchor

World 3
Level: 3-8
Coins: 44
Prize: P-Wing

World 4
Level: 4-2
Coins: 22
Prize: Anchor

World 5
Level: 5-5
Coins: 28
Prize: P-Wing

World 6
Level: 6-7
Coins: 78
Prize: Anchor

World 7
Level: 7-2
Coins: 46
Prize: P-Wing
7. Some blocks allow you to fall behind the scenery of a level. What color blocks are they?

Answer: White

If you bend down for five seconds while on a white block, you will fall behind the scenery. If you do so in World 1-3 and run to the end of the stage you will go behind the actual ending of the stage into a secret Toad House that will give you one of the game's three warp whistles.
8. Which game did "Super Mario Bros. 3" take its sound effect for when Mario blows a Warp Whistle?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

Both "The Legend of Zelda" and "Super Mario Bros. 3" feature items that make sound. In "The Legend of Zelda", if Link blows on the recorder, a Whirlwind takes him away. Using the exact same sound effect, if Mario blows on a secret whistle he will be taken to a special warp zone.
9. "Super Mario Bros. 3" was an arcade title.

Answer: True

The first time I ever played "Super Mario Bros. 3", it was in a local Pizza Hut in my home town. I remember being puzzled because there were question blocks actually on the ground in World 1-1 and I didn't know how to get it. Several other Nintendo titles were part of the Player-10 arcade series, including "Super Mario Bros." and "Castlevania". I remember playing all three titles in arcades.

They actually made several changes to the arcade version of "Super Mario Bros." and even replaced original levels with levels from the Japanese "Super Mario Bros. 2".

This arcade title is known as "Vs. Super Mario Bros."
10. How many games previously starred Mario in the "Super Mario" series before Nintendo published "Super Mario Bros. 3"? (This refers only to games bearing the title "Super Mario Bros.", or the core series itself, not the numerous camoes, sports titles, "Wrecking Ball", the regular arcade "Mario Bros", "Donkey Kong" etc that Mario appeared in).

Answer: Four

"Super Mario Bros. 3" is the fifth title starring Mario in the "Super Mario Bros." series. The first title is "Super Mario Bros.", published in 1985. In 1986, Nintendo allowed Hudson to develop a Mario game for the NEC PC-8801 computer called "Super Mario Bros. Special". Nintendo officially licensed this game, although they played no part in its development, much like the Zelda CD-i titles.

Then later on in 1986 Nintendo released "Super Mario Bros. 2" on the Famicom Disk System add on peripheral for the Famicom.

In 1988 they released "Super Mario Bros. 2", which was a slight revision of the Japanese Famicom Disk System title "Doki Doki Panic". Then, in 1988 in Japan and 1990 in the United States, Nintendo released this masterpiece.
