Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You begin 'Doom I' as a stranger to a new world, a world of hell. Your only means of survival - a pistol? Well, I guess you have to start somewhere! Which of these monsters can be found on level 1 of 'Doom I'? [Hurt me plenty mode]

Answer: Imp

Yes it is an imp. The imp is a brown creature which flings bright red fireballs in your direction, very quickly! They are one of the most commonly found monsters in both 'Doom I' and 'Doom II'. You should be thankful that you don't run into a spider mastermind with just a pistol, it must be bordering on the impossible to kill with just a pistol. If it is possible it will take a rather long time, so, either way I don't advise it!
The pain elemental can actually be found on level 1, if you play in ultra violence mode.
2. This particular monster is red in colour and has an uncanny resemblance to a cherry. It shoots pink fireballs and loses its eye upon death. What is the name given to this flying ball?

Answer: Cacodemon

The cacodemon is a monster frequently seen during your journey through the multitude of levels in the game. Not a particularly difficult creature to kill but, when in a group, it can severely damage your health percentage! It is also one of those creatures which, when on its own, you can risk using the chainsaw to eliminate. If you are short on ammunition and need to kill this creature, your fist or chainsaw works fine and it only takes a matter of seconds.

It really does leave an impressive blob on the floor when killed!
3. This monster sort of resembles a pink jellied pig and runs around as if reluctant to attack. However, when they do eventually decide to attack (usually in packs, particularly in 'Doom II') they make one of the most horrendous noises heard in the entire game. What is this vocal monster with no long range attacks?

Answer: Demon

Demons definitely personify the age old expression,'the bark is worse than the bite'. They are generally quite easy to handle - a shotgun will probably suffice. I was doing a bit of research and found that the majority of players like to use the chainsaw on the demon as it both prevents it from attacking and also saves ammunition. They seem to have a few relatives on the game.

Besides the normal pink demon there is a slightly tougher blue/green demon. Also, there is the almost invisible translucent demon which when encountered in a very dark room can be very tricky to spot and can cause some considerable damage.
4. Occasionally, the monsters in 'Doom' will fight amongst themselves. However, there is one particular monster that no other creature, bar yourself, will attack. Which?

Answer: Pain Elemental

The pain elemental is probably one of the most weird yet enigmatic creatures in the entirety of 'Doom I' and 'Doom II'. It makes surreal noises and shoots the most irritating creatures, lost souls, from its mouth. It looks worse than what it actually is and when it comes to killing this enigma, it is usually non-problematic.
5. Which of the following attributes can be used to describe a mancubus?

Answer: Fat

These rather grotesque creatures are indeed fat and ugly but are very dangerous. They have an impressive mêlée attack which consists of multiple fireballs being shot quickly in your direction. A nightmare to dodge especially when there are more than one of these nightmares present.

A level in which you find many mancubi in a very small space is a level in 'Doom II' called,'Dead Simple'. This short but tricky level requires you to kill multiple mancubi and upon doing so, a subsequent plethora of spiders called arachnotrons are released.
6. There are in effect, two mechanical spiders present in 'Doom'. They differ in how hard they are to defeat and also in the type of weapon they themselves use. Which of the following spider-like monster uses a plasma gun style attack?

Answer: Arachnotron

The arachnotron is one of my favourite monsters in 'Doom I' and 'Doom II'. It has a plasma gun, which, can reduce your health from 100% to 0% in a matter of seconds, so vigilance is key. It is quite a prominent monster in two levels in particular. These levels are called,'The Factory', and,'Dead Simple'.
7. Which of the following monsters is NOT present on the PS1 versions of 'Doom I' and 'Doom II'?

Answer: Arch-Vile

Whilst doing some extra research for this quiz I encountered the name of creature that I had never previously heard of. The arch-vile is present in the PC version of 'Doom', but as far as I am aware not present in the PS1 version. Upon further reading I discovered that this was probably due to the fact that the number of frames used on an arch-vile was too much for the PS1 system to handle.
The spider mastermind is a very rare creature and are generally found on the final level of 'Doom II' which is called,'Redemption Denied'.
8. Possibly one of the most innately harmless monsters on the game, yet, one of the most annoying. This pest is unlikely to kill you by itself, but can hinder you to such an extent that a stronger monster will come along and finish you off instead. What is the name of this perpetual menace?

Answer: Lost Soul

The lost soul is basically a flying skull with flames for hair. They fly around hissing at every opportunity and, as I earlier stated, aren't innately dangerous, but are a nuisance none the less. One example I can give for this situation is for the level named the,'Tower of Babel'.

There are many lost souls pestering you whilst you are trying to defeat one of the hardest monsters on the game, the cyberdemon. If you have played this version of 'Doom' you will know what I mean! If you haven't played it, I highly recommend you give it a try.
9. This monster was the one that probably scared me the most as a young lad! It resembles a mutilated skeletal figure with rocket launchers on his shoulders. It has many different attacks and has a ballistic attack that is unique amongst all the creatures found in 'Doom I' and 'Doom II'. What is the name of this nightmare?

Answer: Revenant

I will admit that this creature frightened me as a small boy. Yes, I have shamed myself! The unique aspect of this beast's arsenal that I was referring to was the fact that its fireballs can turn corners and are not restricted to just a straight line.

This trait similar to that of a homing device makes it far more difficult to dodge and I have seen this fireball following me for ridiculous amounts of time in the past! Also, when this fireball hits, it can cause severe damage. It also has a fair punch. Stand too close to this beast and it will assault you!
10. The ultimate monster of 'Doom', this annihilating creation is only ever seen a handful of times throughout the 59 levels of 'Doom I' and 'Doom II', and boy is that enough! This monster blasts rocket at you at a punishing rate - one blast and you may well be done and dusted. What is it called?

Answer: Cyberdemon

This monster is considered to be the hardest in the game. It shoots three rockets at a time and one is enough to kill you, even when you are in a good state of health! The cyberdemon isn't all that common and isn't spotted very often. One level in which this particular monster makes its presence felt is called,'Tricks and Traps'. This fiendishly challenging and confusing level features the cyberdemon in a room with roughly 20 barons of hell. If you are clever enough, you can irritate the cyberdemon, stand by the door, and watch him annihilate all of the barons of hell. This makes your job much easier as, during the process, the cyberdemon is also weakened.

Well, thanks for playing my first ever video games quiz, I hope you enjoyed!
