Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Completely optional, what boss blocks Kolorado's trip home to Koopa Village?

Answer: Kent C. Koopa

Kent C. Koopa is a rather oversized Koopa who, after Chapter Five, will hang around the road to Koopa Village, blocking Professor Kolorado from returning to his home. Since this is an optional battle, it's up to you if you'd like to fight. At 70HP and with a large, protective shell, Kent C. is quite strong and hurts.

However, he's susceptible to sleep and will nod off anytime Mario uses a Sleepy Sheep or Lullaby. Use this to your advantage and go for the weak spots (the tail) to get this fight over and done with...otherwise you'll have to pay a toll of 100 coins to pass through every time.
2. Mario discovers that the only way to get to Starborn Valley is through which area?

Answer: Toad Town Sewers

Learning from Twink that the final Star Spirit is somewhere on the other side of the frosty Starborn Valley, Mario must find a way to get there. The only way to reach this area is by heading into one of the deepest parts of the Toad Town Sewers. Utilizing his comrades' powers, Mario can cross platforms and reach the doors to the proper warp pipe. Because Lakilester is found in Chapter 6 in Flower Fields, the village can not be accessed until Mario defeats Huff N. Puff to ensure that the story follows its course.
3. Upon arriving in Shiver City, Mario will find that the Mayor Penguin is dead. What is written on a paper in his hand?

Answer: Herringway

When Mario heads west through Shiver City, he'll find Mayor Penguin's house at the far end. Being welcomed in by the Mayor's wife, Mario will head to the back room to find the Mayor Penguin dead on the floor. His wife will call the local investigator and claim that Mario was the culprit, but Mario will have his innocence proven.

Instead of being taken to jail, Mario will assist the inspector in his search for the actual person responsible for this tragic crime. The only clue to begin this is a note saying the name 'Herringway' in the Mayor's hands. Until Mario solves the crime, he will be unable to leave Shiver City.
4. Is Mayor Penguin dead?

Answer: No

To solve the mystery, Mario must begin by breaking the ice pond in Shiver City to reach the Warehouse Key (with Sushie's help). He can use this to reach the secret room occupied by the penguin mystery author, Herringway. Herringway will head to the Mayor's house to straighten things out and the group will discover that the Mayor had not actually died- he accidentally fell while trying to reach a highly-shelved package for Herringway and he knocked himself unconscious. Everybody heads off to what they were doing and Mario is granted access to Starborn Valley to the east.
5. Backtrack! Shouldn't you have had the Ultra Boots by now? Which supporting character is required for Mario to claim these?

Answer: Lakilester

Okay, maybe we skipped a step here- and it's important. Head back to the Toad Town Sewers (in your mind) and recall a set of spikes only crossable using Lakilester. Hopping into a pipe here, Mario can head through the sewers and find the Ultra Boots, the final upgradable weapon in the game.

These boots allow Mario to jump on enemies with more power. Outside of battle, Mario is also able to do the Tornado Jump while pressing A in the air. This allows him to spin and jump higher than before to hit higher blocks.

This is a necessary item to reach Shiver City.
6. Monstar, a boss in Shiver Snowfield, deals how much damage in a single hit?

Answer: 1

As Mario progresses to Starborn Valley, he'll start with a fight against the now-magic-wielding Jr. Troopa (don't ask about the wand). After this, the scamp will freeze in the ice until appearing in the final chapter of the game (where he doesn't poses as a threat any longer). Later in the area, Mario will come across a starry creature known only as Monstar, but surprisingly its health is a meager 20HP and it can only strike for 1 damage after an overembellished magic attack.

After Mario finishes this quick battle, the enemy is revealed to be nothing but tiny stars, much like Twink.
7. Who watches over the Star Kids in Starborn Valley?

Answer: Merle

Merle is Merlon's son who watches over the Star Kids at his post at the end of the Shiver Snowfield. Before these Star Kids make their way to Star Haven, where young stars aspire to shine, they are trained here under Merle's care. Merle will give Mario a Scarf, one of two items necessary to open the pathway to Shiver Mountain and the Crystal Palace, the next dungeon.

The other item, a Bucket, will be given to Mario by the Mayor of Shiver City, but only after receiving the Scarf. After this, Mario can place these items on their respective snowmen in Shiver Snowfield to open the path through Shiver Mountain.
8. Which of these can the Crystal King do in battle?

Answer: Copy himself

Heading through Shiver Mountain, Mario will require the help of the ghost of Madame Merlar and her Star Stone to access the Crystal Palace. Within this area, Mario will need to face off against Duplighosts and frozen creatures aplenty before reaching the Crystal King himself, the boss of this seventh dungeon.

The Crystal King, found in the dungeon's final chamber, is a boss of 70HP who actually refills his health (by 20HP) on occasion. With the Crystal King using Crystal Bits and copying himself into a second image, Mario will need to stay on his toes to maintain his health and defeat the boss' incarnations.
9. What is the name of the final Star Spirit who Mario must rescue in Chapter 7?

Answer: Kalmar

Kalmar is the seventh of Seven Star Spirits saved by Mario in the course of the game and he is characterized by a single unique feature: his mustache. Kalmar's strength is added to Mario's current star powers and as a result he will earn a seventh and final bar of Star Power during battle.

As well, Mario will learn the Star Power known as Up & Away which will turn weak-enough enemies into stars and remove them from battle. This does not work on bosses and while it ends the battle, Mario will not earn any Star Points from his 'victory'.
10. At the end of Chapter 7, can the player control Princess Peach around her castle?

Answer: No

Alas! The days of playing as Peach are over for this game. Bowser has caught on and now that Mario has all seven Star Spirits there's no time to let Peach go in and out of her room at will. Twink reveals himself at one point and gets himself kicked out of the castle for good. With all in order, Bowser, Kammy Koopa, and Princess Toadstool head to the highest point of the castle to await Mario's entry with the help of the Star Spirits.

The final battle is nearing and the climactic showdown between the mustached hero and the Koopa King is inevitable.
