Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The largest, most populous city in the lands of Sosaria and Britannia, this is also the seat of government and culture in the land. Most guilds' main branches can be found in this city, along with the most famous inn in the land, The Blue Boar. Which of the following is this particular city?

Answer: Britain

In the world of "Ultima", most of the action takes place on the largest continent of Britannia. The city of Britain, located right in the middle of the continent, serves as the capital of Britannia. It has always been the seat of power since the castle of Lord British is located in the city.

Aside from the castle, various establishments and important buildings are located in the city. The most famous tavern in the land, The Blue Boar, is located smack-dab in the middle of the city. The city is also home to the Museum of Britain, where various artifacts such as the bones of Zog, the first Britannian, are exhibited. The Britannian Royal Mint is also based in the city.

In "Ultima Online", both the castles of Lord British and Lord Blackthorn are located in the city of Britain.
2. This walled city, the largest in southern Britannia, is best known for its paladins. It is often called the City of Honor, and also boasts magnificently unique architecture. What is this city?

Answer: Trinsic

The town of Trinsic is home to (and is protected by) Britannia's order of paladins. Most of the town's cities are made from white sandstone and marble and the architecture is unique in Britannia.

The city plays a major role in "Ultima VII: The Black Gate". In the beginning of the game, the Avatar returns to Britannia, arriving via a moongate in Trinsic to discover a grisly murder.

In "Ultima Online", Trinsic like its non-online counterpart, is the biggest southern city in Britannia. In the game, the classic white walls of the city are more clearly defined than in other "Ultima"s, even with the presence of player-owned houses that may or may not match the city architecture.
3. In the two centuries between "Ultima VI: The False Prophet" and "Ultima VII: The Black Gate", this 'city of spirituality' was a thriving town. Located on an island west of the mainland of Britannia, the city was destroyed in a massive cataclysm prior to the events of "Ultima VII: The Black Gate" What is this city?

Answer: Skara Brae

Skara Brae is a small, self-sustaining town located on an island due west of the Britannian mainland. It is known as the city of spirituality, and the corresponding shrine itself is located very close to the main island. Travel to Skara Brae can usually be accomplished by a ferry across the strait separating it from the Britannian mainland.

In-between "Ultima VI" and "Ultima VII", a massive tragedy befell the town. Already degenerating into insanity during "Ultima VI", a mage named Horance constructed a great tower of blackrock on the island of Skara Brae. He turned himself into an undead lich and started amassing an undead army to take over Britannia. The townspeople, in a desperate attempt to stop the lich, accidentally blew up the tower, along with most of the island.

The entire town is populated by ghosts by the beginning of "Ultima VII".

The city of Skara Brae was destroyed by the Guardian in "Ultima IX: Acension".
4. This northern city is primarily known for its fine ores and blacksmithing guilds. What is this city?

Answer: Minoc

The mountain city of Minoc is the northernmost populated city on the Britannian mainland. Located within mountains with rich veins of iron ore, the town is primarily known as a mining town. The city is also referred to as the city of sacrifice, and is in close proximity with the Shrine of Sacrifice.

Minoc's population includes a high percentage of craftsmen and artisans, usually blacksmiths, tinkers and gemworkers. The city itself is home to the Guild of Artisans and the Britannian Mining Company.

In the events preceeding "Ultima IX: Ascension", Minoc was relocated onto an island along with the township of Cove following the massive upheavals caused by the Guardian's arrival in Britannia.
5. This island-borne town is located southeast of the Britannian mainland and is renowned for its mages, academists, scholars and scribes. What is this town?

Answer: Moonglow

Known as the city of honesty, Moonglow is located on a small island, Verity Isle, situated to the southeast of the Britannian mainland. It is best known for being a center of academics and knowledge in Britannia. Most mages and wizards study in Moonglow before they set out for other places. Because of this, the city's has a higher population of magic-users and scholars than other Britannian towns and cities.

One of the major attractions in the city is the Lycaeum, essentially the biggest repository of books, scrolls and knowledge throughout the land. The Lycaeum is the stronghold of Truth, one of the three principles of virtue (Love and Courage being the other two).

Another persistent attraction is the Moonglow Observatory, which houses the largest telescope in Britannia. The observatory also has a famous Orrery, a large mechanical model of the "Ultima" solar system. The city of Moonglow is also home to a world-renowned zoo.

In the online game "Ultima Online", the city of Moonglow is pretty much similar to its offline counterpart, with a few differences. One can teleport to the island using a magic pentagram.
6. This rural farming town south of Britain has had many incarnations in the "Ultima" series. It was formerly the city of Humility before another town took that title. Which of the following is this town?

Answer: Paws

The township of Paws has had numerous incarnations and evolutions throughout the course of the "Ultima" series. Originally, it started out as the city of Humility. Over time, that moniker was migrated to the rebuilt city of New Magincia.

Paws became a small farming town located directly south of Britain, eventually being reduced to a few houses surrounded by a swamp by the time of "Ultima IX: Ascension".

Despite being a small town, Paws has had an interesting history in-game. In "Ultima VII: The Black Gate", there is an easter egg in Paws which is a crash-landed Kilrathi (From the "Wing Commander" series) space ship in the middle of a corn field. It is also where the Avatar can get the extremely powerful magical weapon, the Hoe of Destruction.

In "Ultima Online", the township of Paws does not officially exist.
7. This northern town is home to the Court of Justice and Empath Abbey. It is noted for being a haven for rangers and woodsmen, and is one of Britannia's most-environmentally-conscious settlements. Where is this town?

Answer: Yew

The city of Yew is located within the great silverwood forest in the northeastern region of Britannia. Surrounded by a vast and ancient forest, Yew is home to many bowyers, hunters and lumberjacks. The forests of Yew are famous for being the one place in Britannia where one can find the enormous Yew trees, with trunks thicker than a man is tall. Another endemic vegetative species found in Yew are the rare Silverleaf trees. Various creatures are known to inhabit the woods around the city, such as the nature-loving Emps. The mysterious creatures known as wisps also make the Yew woods their home.

Known as the City of Justice, it is home to Britannia's Court of Justice. It also houses a prison, where criminals awaiting trial are kept. Convicted felons are not kept within the city limits, and instead are sent to the Dungeon Wrong.

Empath Abbey, the stronghold of the principle of Love, is also found in the city. It is also a monastery, known for the monks that make the best wine in Britannia.

The Avatar's constant companion, Iolo the bard (and his companion Gwenno) lives in a small house just outside Yew.

In "Ultima IX: Ascesnsion", the city was destroyed and rebuilt as a treetop-town.
8. This southern Britannian town is situated on one or more of the island chain known as the Valorian Isles. Later in Britannia's history, a cataclysm destroyed the isles on which the town stood. The city was then rebuilt and renamed Valoria. What is this island city?

Answer: Jhelom

Jhelom, one of the southernmost cities in Britannia, is officially known as the City of Valor. It is renowned for its martial traditions, as the city is home to warriors, fighters, mercenaries and thugs. The center of the city is home to the 'dueling pit', where competitions are held to determine the best fighter in the islands.

In the time of "Ultima IX: Ascension", the original island group was devastated by volcanic eruptions related to the Guardian's arrival in Britannia. The city of Jhelom was rebuilt on a new island and renamed Valoria.

In "Ultima Online", the city is split between three geographically separate islands.
9. Early in Britannia's history, the place on which this city stood was a mere archipelago located to the southeast of the Britannian mainland. After the events of "Ultima VI", the island became the capital of the gargoyle nation. What is this city?

Answer: Terfin

Interestingly enough, during the time of "Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar", the place where Terfin was to be built later was just a small trio of islands in the Britannian Ocean. In "Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny", the island group had already merged into a single land mass.

During the events of "Ultima VI: The False Prophet", the Avatar discovered that due to his removal of the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom from the Stygian Abyss, the underworld was being destroyed and that the gargoyles who lived within were migrating to the surface world onto the island of Terfin. By the time of "Ultima VII: The Black Gate", Terfin was already the capital city of the gargoyle nation.

In the events leading up to "Ultima IX: Ascension", the gargoyle city on Terfin was destroyed and the gargoyles relocated to another city, Ambrosia (which was renamed Balterges in a fan-made patch). The island of Terfin then became the stronghold of the evil entity known as the Guardian.

The island (and city) of Terfin does not exist in "Ultima Online" since the events after Ultima I had not occurred yet. The Codex of Ultimate Wisdom is still in the Stygian Abyss, along with the majority of the gargoyle population (who are faceless monsters in the game itself).
10. This town was originally a bustling port city before it was destroyed by daemons. Afterwards, it was rebuilt by shepherds and became known as the City of Humility. What is this town?

Answer: New Magincia

Originally, the city of Magincia was a successfully rich port city located on an island southeast of the Britannian mainland. Its inhabitants were financially blessed, being a major trade route, and pride and avarice became 'virtues' of the population.

In a stroke of divine vengeance, a great force of daemons overwhelmed and devastated the city, slaughtering the inhabitants and destroying structures until nothing was left of the original city. Shepherds came to the island years after and the once-proud city of Magincia was reborn as the humble herding town of New Magincia.

The moniker "City of Humility" was then-transferred to New Magincia from the town of Paws.

In "Ultima Online", the city of Magincia remains a bustling port town since the events of "Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar" has not happened (yet).
