Harth Stonebrew is the enigmatic dwarf that is the owner of the tavern that is the setting to "Hearthstone". He is normally known simply as the Innkeeper. He greets you when the game starts, guides you through the beginning tutorial, and allows you to practice against him when you are new or testing out a new deck. His likeness can also be seen in the highest ranks of rank play.

Malfurion is the default Druid in "Hearthstone". In "Warcraft", he is a night elf and has been leader of the night elves for thousands of years. As a "Hearthstone" character, he has the ability to accelerate growth by gaining mana faster than the other players.

He is often able to play large, powerful minions or minions that generate other minions (tokens). Many of his spells are "choose one" effects, allowing him to have a greater variety of options over the same number of cards, as compared to other classes.

Rexxar is the default Hunter in "Hearthstone". In "Warcraft", he is a half-orc, half-ogre beastmaster. As a Hunter, he has access to low-cost weapons and beasts with above-average stats for their costs. Many of the spells that Rexxar uses synergize and become stronger when he has beasts by his side. Hunters are one of the three classes that have access to secrets (which play out as traps).

Many of the beasts that Rexxar uses have deathrattles, effects that activate when they are destroyed.

Jaina is the default Mage in "Hearthstone". In "Warcraft", she is one of its strongest magic-wielders and eventually became leader of the Kirin Tor. In "Hearthstone", she is the first character you are given access to and use her to go through the tutorial and then defeat and gain access to the other eight playable classes. Jaina's strength is in her spells, which have strong effects, and in particular allow you to quickly deal a lot of direct damage or destroy minions.

Many of her spells and minions come with freezing effects, which temporarily prevent opponents from attacking you. Those that do direct damage, like Fireball and Forgotten Torch, are commonly themed around fire.

Uther is the default Paladin in "Hearthstone". In "Warcraft", he was the first Paladin of the Knights of the Silver Hand and also a champion of the Holy Light. As a "Hearthstone" character, he can call upon Silver Hand recruits to always have minions on the board.

Many of Uther's spells are buffing spells, which make his minions stronger. Many of his spells and minions come with divine shields, which prevent minions from taking damage once, allowing them to attack enemies while surviving themselves. Uther also uses weapons, has powerful healing effects, and has cheap, relatively weak secrets.

Anduin is the default Priest in "Hearthstone". In "Warcraft", he is the prince of Stormwind, son of the king Varian, leader of the Alliance. In "Hearthstone", Anduin can heal characters with his hero power as well as with some of his spells. Anduin can use spells like Shadowform and minions like Auchenai Soulpriest to turn his healing effects into damaging ones, creating a motif of darkness along with light.

He is also able to copy many of the cards an opponent uses and steal others outright. The Priest class also has access to many of the strong dragon-related cards in "Hearthstone".

Valeera is the default rogue in "Hearthstone". She is a friend of Anduin in "Warcraft" but does not particularly belong to either the Alliance or the Horde. In "Hearthstone", Valeera is always able to equip a dagger and damage an opponent. Most of her spells are cheap, and she is able to activate them readily with cards like Preparation.

Her spells and minions often combo well: they become vastly stronger if at least one other card has been played during the turn. As a rogue, Valeera is able to make friendly minions and opponents' minions vanish, either to get them out of the way or reuse their effects.

Thrall is the default Shaman in "Hearthstone". He was originally a slave in "Warcraft", rose to leader of the Horde, and eventually appointed Garrosh as the Horde's new leader. In "Hearthstone", Thrall's shamanistic nature is embodied in the totems he can always call on, which represent the four "classic" elements.

A number of Thrall's minions have windfury, which allows them to make two attacks in a single turn; his weapon Doomhammer grants him that ability as well. Thrall also uses Overload cards, which are cheaper than comparable cards from other classes, but in turn cause you to lose mana on the following turn.

Gul'dan is the default warlock in "Hearthstone". He created the first death knights and led the orcs towards their enslavement in "Warcraft"; he is also considered one of most powerful beings to have ever lived. Gul'dan regularly taps into his life to give himself strength in "Hearthstone".

His power allows him to draw an extra card per turn at the cost of taking 2 damage. Many of his minions and spells are strong for their cost, but in return carry the drawbacks of taking damage or discarding other cards. Nearly all demon minions in "Hearthstone" are exclusively available to warlocks.

Garrosh is the default Warrior in "Hearthstone". In "Warcraft", he was appointed leader of the Horde by Thrall, led it in a brutal manner, became obsessed with the powers of the Old Gods, and was eventually overthrown and replaced by Vol'jin. As a warrior in "Hearthstone", most of Garrosh's power comes from gaining armor and wielding weapons.

Many of his spells involve minions damaged (as if through war), whether it be making them stronger or instantly killing them. Garrosh has access to a lot of minions with taunt, which have to be destroyed before other, non-taunt enemies.
