Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the object of the game?

Answer: Fly through a space fortress while dodging obstacles and enemy fire

"Zaxxon" was loved (or hated) for its variety of challenges. It required evasive skills and thinking ahead, and featured attacks from many angles, as opposed to just picking off waves of monsters. This made "Zaxxon" more complicated than many other games.
2. How did the player refuel?

Answer: By destroying fuel storage drums

Perhaps contrary to logic, in "Zaxxon" you earned more fuel by blowing open cylindrical containers. This enabled the player to not have to land or stop in order to fill up.
3. Which of the following was an obstacle in the game?

Answer: An energy field

The barrier resembled lines of barbed wire. The player had to fly under it.
4. When the game debuted in arcades in 1982, which of the following of its features was considered unique?

Answer: The angle of view--overhead and on a tilt

This perspective gave the impression of a 3-D surface. In most games, you got what amounted to a side view of the progress--as if you were watching cars go by. "Zaxxon," however, let you see the "ground" from overhead.
5. What happened if you kept your ship as high as it could fly for too long?

Answer: A homing missile was launched at you

The game would be too easy if players could keep their ships out of harm's way for long periods of time. To prevent this, the game included something to force you to fly down again. The rocket was launched if you tried to stay at the top of the screen for more than a few seconds.
6. How many worlds, total, did you go to in the game?

Answer: 1

The entire battle is fought against one vast fortress. Although you progress through different sections of it, you never move anywhere else. The player's ship is always in flight.
7. What graphic appeared on the left side of the screen?

Answer: Your ship's altimeter

There was no such thing as a safe landing in the game--you exploded if you touched the ground. Thus it helped to be kept aware of your precise location.
8. Who wrote the music for the U.S. arcade version?

Answer: There was none

Most games of the day contained some sort of electronic soundtrack. "Zaxxon," however, overlooked this practice, and included only the sounds of flight and battle in its auditory catalog.
9. Which of the following was an unusual but real feature of the player's ship?

Answer: It cast a shadow

If you flew over flat ground, the shadow appeared under the craft. However, if you approached a wall, the shadow appeared to go *through* it, instead of the more logical reaction of rippling on the surface. This was a source of criticism from gaming magazines at the time.
10. What "boss" did you face at the end?

Answer: A giant robot

The robot was named Zaxxon. If you won, you got to start the game from the first point, but the difficulty increased.
