Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When was Abraham Lincoln inaugurated for his first term?

Answer: March 4, 1861

Today the inauguration takes place on January 20th, but back then there was a longer stretch before the President Elect was sworn in.
2. During the Republican Nomination Convention in 1860, Lincoln lost to this man on the first two ballots, but finally won the party's nomination on the third ballot.

Answer: William Seward

William Seward was the favorite going into the convention. Seward won on the first two ballots, but failed to get the number of votes needed to secure his nomination. Lincoln, who got second to Seward on the first two ballots, gained the votes of others who dropped out so by the third ballot Lincoln won carrying enough votes to win the nomination. Lincoln would later make Seward his Secretary of State.
3. Lincoln received zero votes in 9 southern states in the 1860 election.

Answer: True

Lincoln was not on the ballot paper in 9 states - he was on the ballot paper in Tennessee.
4. After what battle did Lincoln decided to issue the Emancipation Proclamation?

Answer: Antietam

Lincoln wanted to wait for a victory before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. The number of casualties at Antietam were four times that of Normandy in WWII.
5. Lincolns Gettysburg Address was received enthusiastically by the crowd.

Answer: False

He gave his speech for the dedication of the graveyard at Gettysburg. This would become his most famous speech, but the crowd expected him to give a longer speech and was taken aback by its shortness. It was not until people read the speech in newspapers that it became so well thought of.
6. What biblical passage did Lincoln quote in his famous "House Divided" speech?

Answer: Mark 3:25

"If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand." Mark 3:25
Lincoln used it referring to the divided state of the country as half slave and half free.
7. Lincoln opposed this compromise just before the war, which would have allowed for the expansion of slavery.

Answer: Crittenden Compromise

John J. Crittenden introduced the compromise in Congress in hopes of averting war. Lincoln opposed it and all compromise that would have allowed for the expansion of slavery.
8. In his first inaugural address, Lincoln said he would support a proposed thirteenth amendment to the Constitution that congress had passed. What would the amendment have effectively meant?

Answer: Congress could not make slavery illegal

The proposed amendment (intended to discourage the Southern states from leaving the Union) was the only compromise effort Congress was able to pass; however, the war came and it was never ratified. Instead the actual "thirteenth amendment" would later abolish slavery.
9. How many terms did Lincoln serve in Congress?

Answer: One

He served in Congress from 1847-49. He "retired" because like many of his day he believed the Compromise of 1850 had forever solved the country's slavery problem.
10. Upon hearing the news of what battle did Lincoln sullenly exclaim, "My God, my God! What will the country say?"

Answer: Chancellorsville

Stonewall Jackson would be accidentally shot by his own men during this battle and would later die.
