Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This large, multinational company has its headquarters in New York State. Famed for its many inventions and discoveries, the company's employees have won at least five Nobel Prizes. This company holds more patents than any other American company and it is often referred to as 'Big Blue'. Which company is this?

Answer: IBM (International Business Machines)

IBM has played a major role in the evolving history of the computer industry. Famous inventions by IBM include the automated teller machine (ATM), the floppy disk, the hard disk drive, the magnetic stripe card, and the relational database. They so dominated the early computer market (especially the business sector) that they were once referred to as IBM against the BUNCH - BUNCH being an acronym for five of their competitors - Burroughs, UNIVAC, NCR, Control Data Corporation and Honeywell.
2. Relational Software Inc, based in California, changed its name in 1982 to better identify with its very popular Database Management software product. One of the first relational databases to work in a client-server environment, their software is used extensively in many large corporations. Larry Ellison is a co-founder and their long-time CEO. Which company is this?

Answer: Oracle Corp

Edgar F. Codd, an English computer scientist working for IBM, developed the relational database theory. And while IBM was an early adopter, Oracle was able to develop their RDBMS (Relational Data Base Management System) using the 'C' programming language, enabling it to run on a wide variety of servers. Thus, it has become very popular in today's multi-vendor and distributed environments.
3. The founder of this company, a Harvard dropout, is one of the wealthiest men in the world, ranking number one from 1999 until 2009. The company was established in 1975 and is based in Washington State. Answer: Microsoft

Microsoft initially gained a foothold in the personal computer market with its MS-DOS operating system, running on the IBM Personal Computer. This OS was eventually replaced with the more graphical and user-friendly 'Windows' operating system. Although they have managed to successfully maintain their dominant position, both the U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission have found Microsoft in violation of antitrust laws.

Answer: Unisys

6. This company is based in Massachusetts. They were the first to fully utilize the RAID concept in large storage devices. RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks.
