Sir Lyne was the Premier of New South Wales and being the senior colony, he had the right to be Prime Minister. In the end, Edmund Barton became Prime Minister.

Edmund Barton served as Prime Minister from 1 January 1901 to the 24 September 1903. He then served as High Court Judge and on the 7 January 1920, died suddenly of heart failure.
