Answer: Democratic-Republican Party

Jefferson initially called the new party 'The Republican Party'. With advice from James Madison they renamed the new party as 'The Democratic-Republican Party.

George Clinton was vice-president during President Jefferson's 2nd term in office and then he was the vice-president under President Madison from 1809 until he died in office in 1812.

Answer: Henry Clay and Daniel Webster

Henry Clay was the presidential nominee of the Whig Party in {1844;} but he lost to James Polk. After the Whig Party was established in 1834 Daniel Webster received the electoral vote of Massachusetts for president in 1837.

Zachary Taylor was the presidential nominee of the Whig Party in 1848, in spite of strong competition from Henry Clay and General Winfield Scott. Taylor finally won the nomination on the 4th ballot. He then defeated Van Buren in the 1848 election. The Free-Soil Party was finally absorbed into the new Republican Party in 1852.

Answer: South Carolina

South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860.On January 9, 1861 Mississippi was the second State to secede.

John Quincy Adams was president of the U. S. from 1825 to 1829. In 1833 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the State of Massachusetts. He remained in that office until 1846 at which time he suffered a fatal stroke while sitting in his chamber seat.

In 1845 Martin Van Buren, the Democratic Party nominee, failed to get his party's nomination after 7 ballots. James Polk was added to the slate as the 'dark-horse' candidate and he won the nomination on the 9th ballot. He then defeated Henry Clay, the Whig Party nominee, in the 1845 election.
9. Which president established the Civil Service Commission?

Answer: Chester A. Arthur

President Arthur signed the Pendelton Act in 1883 which established the Civil Service Commission. Prior to that Act the 'Spoils System' was the prevailing means by which government jobs were given to party supporters.
10. Which of these 18th- and 19th- century presidents was the oldest on his first election day?

Answer: James Buchanan

James Buchanan was 66 years of age on his election day. John Adams was age 63; Andrew Jackson was 62. All other presidents in this category were in their 50s, except Ulysses Grant and Franklin Pierce who were 47 and 49 years of age respectively.
