In response to a correction I received, I'll paste my reply: As with anything in political science, there are always exceptions to rules. Please look up on google "free trade" and "democrat" and the vast majority of results you will find are papers on how a democratic candidate can overcome the party's anti-free trade leanings. The Democratic party wants free trade - exporting, but importing they want the highest tariffs possible.
