Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which treaty was the name 'European Union' first used?

Answer: Maastricht

Before Maastricht, the European Union was called the 'European Community'. The term 'Union' was introduced in the text which came out of the Maastricht Conference.
2. Put the following Treaties in the correct chronological order : Amsterdam, Maastricht, Paris, Rome.

Answer: Paris, Rome, Maastricht, Amsterdam

Paris started everything.
3. Which of the following countries voted in a 2016 referendum to leave the European Union?

Answer: United Kingdom

As the EU began to interfere more and more in the dealings of its member nations, some of the more independent-minded of them began to complain. Most notably, in 2016 the UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, bowed to popular pressure and allowed the people of his country to vote in a referendum on whether they wished to remain in, or leave, the EU.

Much to the annoyance of the EU, 52% of voters elected to leave, and the process of "Brexit" ("British Exit") began.
4. How many members did the Union count when the Euro began circulation in January 2000?

Answer: 15

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
5. How many EU countries joined the Eurozone when Euro coins and banknotes were first circulated on 1st January 2002?

Answer: 12

Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and The Netherlands. Of the 15 EU members, three (Denmark, the UK and Sweden) did not adopt the Euro as their currency.
6. What was the former name for the currency for Europe, now known as the Euro?

Answer: ECU

Before the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) was founded, the Economic Monetary Cooperation was founded in 1978. This included a European Currency Unit, the ECU.
7. How many stars are there on the European flag?

Answer: 12

Ironically, the number twelve is sometimes said to be the symbol of perfection, completeness and unity. The 12 stars do not represent the 12 countries who were the original member states.
8. Who was not a president of the European Commission?

Answer: Dehaene

Dehaene was nominated to follow Delors. Though the obvious candidate, he was blocked (in favor of Santer) by British Prime Minister, John Major.
9. Which of these is not part of the European Union?

Answer: The Council of Europe

The Council of Europe has members that are not members of the European Union and it is responsible for a European Declaration on the Human Rights. It is not mentioned in the Treaty on the European Union or in the Treaty on the European Community. However, it did gave the incentive to a process now called European integration.
10. The presidency of the European Union is rotated every _____ months.

Answer: 6

This is so when I wrote this quiz (2002). This might change in the course of time
