Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hitler became chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. How many days before or after this did Roosevelt become US president?

Answer: 33 days later on March 4

Roosevelt became US president on March 4, 1933. The 21st amendment to the Constitution was ratified that year and changed the date of the president's term to start on January 20 but didn't take effect until the following term. Thus Roosevelt's first term was shorter than his second and third because it lasted 43 days fewer than four years.
2. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. How many days before or after this did Hitler die?

Answer: 18 days later on April 30

Hitler died on April 30 when it was apparent that the war would be lost. He had gotten married the day before, and he and his wife both committed suicide in their Berlin bunker.
3. While most people consider Hitler to be an absolute dictator, what part of the government did Roosevelt attempt to change while he was president?

Answer: Add additional justices to the Supreme Court

When the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional several of his policies that were aimed at combatting the depression, Roosevelt fought back by attempting to increase the number of justices from nine to fifteen. Interestingly enough, the Constitution does not specify how many justices the court has, just that there will be a Supreme Court. Congress is responsible for deciding how many justices there are.

The number of justices has ranged from a minimum of six when the court was first setup to a maximum of ten during the end of the Civil War and the start of Reconstruction.

It has remained steady at nine since the late 1860s.
4. Even before the holocaust and the outright attempted extermination of the Jewish people, Hitler's regime showed determined discrimination against the race. What ethnic group was systematically discriminated against in the US towards the end of the Roosevelt administration?

Answer: Japanese

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, there was fear that there would be a fifth column within the US that would side with the Japanese. So internment camps were setup to isolate people of Japanese descent living in America. Many of these were American citizens.

While they weren't the extermination camps that existed within Nazi Germany, they still represented harsh conditions due to an irrational fear by the majority of people within the country.
5. Which of the following statements is true?

Answer: Hitler came to power on Roosevelt's birthday

Franklin Roosevelt was born on January 30, 1882. On his 51st birthday, Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945 which was eight days before Hitler's 56th birthday.
6. Which out of Hitler and Roosevelt was actually born in the country of which they became leader in 1933?

Answer: Roosevelt

Roosevelt, who was president of the US, was born in New York. Hitler, on the other hand, was born in Austria, not in Germany, (although Germany later annexed Austria while Hitler was in power).
7. Who fought in the army in World War I?

Answer: Hitler

Although an Austrian citizen, Hitler was a lance corporal for Germany in World War I. His regiment fought on the western front. Roosevelt, on the other hand, was Assistant Secretary of the Navy, a non-combative role during the entirety of the war.
8. What was the biggest challenge faced by both Hitler and Roosevelt when they first came to power?

Answer: The Great Depression

The Great Depression started with the stock market crash in 1929 and both Germany and America were still suffering from its effects in 1933. Hitler's response to this was to militarize Germany providing jobs to many people. Roosevelt implemented his New Deal which created jobs while also improving the infrastructure within the US.
9. The US declared war on Germany on December 8, 1941.

Answer: False

While the US declared was on Japan the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, they did not declare war on Germany then. Three days later, on December 11, Germany declared war on the United States. In response, the US declared war on Germany several hours later.
10. Who graduated college?

Answer: Roosevelt

Roosevelt graduated from Harvard and then went to law school. Hitler's goal early in life was to become an artist. Although he applied to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts he was not accepted and never attended college.
