Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During a press conference in Hawaii on November 16, 2011, which continent did President Obama mistakenly state he was on?

Answer: Asia

This is an -ism since it is both a US state and the state that he was born and raised. One would hope he would remember where he was raised.

"When I meet with world leaders, what's striking -- whether it's in Europe or here in Asia -- the kinds of fundamental reforms and changes, both on the revenue side and the public pension side, that other countries are having to make are so much more significant than what we need to do in order to get our books in order."
2. During a stump speech in Beaverton, OR in May of 2008, how many states did then Senator Obama claim he had already visited on the campaign trail?

Answer: 57 states

There have been 50 states in the USA since President Obama's home state of Hawaii joined the union on August 21, 1959. It would have been amusing to know what other places he visited that he thought were a part of the United States.

"I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go."
3. During a press conference while campaigning in San Antonio, TX, then Senator Obama angrily left the room, telling the press corp what?

Answer: Come on! I just answered, like, eight questions

After giving a speech in Ohio where he criticized NAFTA for job losses, a memo was released by Canadian authorities, outlining a conversation that one of Obama's financial advisers, Austin D Goolsbee, had with a Canadian official affirming that his speech on the campaign trail "should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans."

The press corp used this press conference to try to extract information about that memo, to which Obama walked away from the podium and responded with, "Come on! I just answered, like, eight questions."

Before this point in the campaign, Hillary Clinton's camp was accusing the press corps of being soft on Obama and failing to ask tough questions.
4. Who did President Obama say has "plagued the [Middle East] region for centuries?"

Answer: The Middle East

January 28, 2010 -- "The Middle East is obviously an issue that has plagued the region for centuries". What he meant to say is anybody's guess.
5. Trying to argue the merits of government-run health care, who did President Obama praise as examples of success?

Answer: Federal Express and UPS

August 11, 2009 -- "UPS and Federal Express are doing fine, right? It's the Post Office that's always having problems."

Federal Express and UPS are privately run organizations - private industry providing a service and doing it well.

The Post Office is regulated by the government - government regulated industry that is going bankrupt and has high customer dissatisfaction.
6. What kind of railroad did President Obama claim the USA built?

Answer: Intercontinental

This is an -ism since the United States of America is not connected to another continent in order to have an intercontinental railroad.

September 22, 2011 - "We're the country that has built the Intercontinental Railroad."
7. During another effort to garner support in the medical community for his health care bill, President Obama claimed the new health care system would bring what?

Answer: Inefficiencies

His supporters say he meant to say efficiencies; his detractors say inefficiencies is a Freudian slip.

July 20, 2009 -- "The reforms we seek would bring greater competition, choice, savings and inefficiencies to our health care system."
8. On April 29, 2010, President Obama said, "We're not trying to push financial reform because we begrudge success that's fairly earned." What did he say next?

Answer: I mean, I do think at a certain point that you've made enough money

Trying to fix his obvious blunder, he stumbled through the remaining explanation: "But, you know, part of the American way is, you know, you can just keep on making it if you're providing a good product or providing good service. We don't want people to stop, ah, fulfilling the core responsibilities of the financial system to help grow our economy."

He said, "I think when you spread the wealth around it's good for everybody" to Joe the Plumber on October 12, 2008.
9. What did President Obama call one of the reporters in Detroit who were asking him about his plans to help the failing auto industry?

Answer: Sweetie

"Hold on one second, sweetie, we're going to do -- we'll do a press avail."

Her sign off on the story was: "This sweetie never did get an answer to that question."

This is a repeat -ism for President Obama, as he also called a female factory worker in Allentown, PA "sweetie". Some reporters and bloggers have speculated that this is a term he uses for women when he doesn't know their names. He doesn't seem to have a similar "term of endearment" for the men.
10. Then Senator Obama gave a Memorial Day speech on May 26, 2008, where he made one "fatal" statement. What was it?

Answer: On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong

The term "fallen hero" refers to the brave military men and women who have fought and died in combat. In this reference, the -ism is seeing those heroes sitting in the audience.

"On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong."
