2. When was the temporary insanity defense first used in the US?

Answer: 1850s

The temporary insanity defense implies that an individual was insane when the crime was committed, and is no longer insane at the time of the trial. It was first used in the US in 1859 by a New York Congressman named Daniel Sickles when he killed his wife's lover. It was also used by Charles Guiteau who assassinated President Garfield in 1881.
3. Which American poet was found not guilty by reason of insanity for his actions during World War II?

Answer: Ezra Pound

Despite modern day psychiatrists questioning his diagnosis, Pound was found not guilty due to insanity in the mid-1940s for his actions on the radio. He often went on anti-Semitic and anti-American rants during the war on foreign radio stations. He spent twelve years in an asylum after his trial.
