In a poll conducted in 2004 only 48% of voters could name the leader of Fine Gael, despite the fact that it was the second largest party in Ireland. This really doesn't say much for his personality or his ability to use the media effectively.
5. Trevor Sargent became the leader of the Green Party in 2001.

Answer: Sinn Fein

Sinn Fein increased its share of the electoral vote in 2002. Much of the controversy surrounded its links with paramilitary and terrorist organisations such as the IRA, of which it was generally accepted to be the political wing (although for presentational reasons it always denied this).
8. The "Rainbow Coalition" of 1994 to 1997 comprised Fine Gael, the Democratic Left and another party. Which?

Answer: Labour

This coalition was led by John Bruton (FG) Tainiste was Dick Spring (Lab) and Prionsios De Rossa (DL) was Social Welfare Minister.
9. Who replaced John Bruton as leader of Fine Gael in 2001?

Answer: Michael Noonan

After tabling a motion of no confidence together with Jim Mitchell, Michael Noonan assumed the role of party leader. However, disastrous general election results in 2002 with Fine Gael dropping from 54 seats to 31 forced Noonan to declare his resignation on election night. The leadership was then taken over by Enda Kenny.
10. And to end, a simple question. Which two parties formed the ruling coalition in 2004?

Answer: Fianna Fail and Progressive Democrats

They have been in power since 1997. Both parties did well in the 2002 general election but the results from the European elections in 2004 were not as good as hoped for. The tide may have started to turn against them.
