Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jacob Zuma on Tribalism: There has always been a lot of tribal conflict in Africa, and it often crosses into politics. The 1980s were a particularly bad time for South Africa with violence between ANC members, and the predominantly Zulu-based Inkatha Freedom party. What are JZ's views on tribalism?

Answer: He is a traditionalist, proud of his Zulu heritage.

JZ often wears a T-shirt with the slogan "100% Zulu Boy" on it. He is a polygamist, in accordance with tribal customs. He is a loyal supporter of the Zulu king, and often consults him. JZ is proud to wear the traditional loin cloth, cowhides and shield, and will wear them to rallies.

In spite of his fierce loyalty to Zulu traditions, he has never been a member of the Inkatha Freedom party. In the early 1990s, he was tasked with calming down the violence in KwaZulu-Natal, a task he succeeded in. The fact that he was a traditional Zulu, without being an Inkatha member, helped define the violence as being political, not tribal, and helped bring about peace.
2. Jacob Zuma on Traditional Music: As JZ knows, there is nothing like a catchy song to unite your followers. So what is the title of his favourite song, which is sung by him and his supporters at rallies?

Answer: Bring me my Machine Gun (Umshini Wami)

"Bring me my Machine Gun" is a song popularized by Umkhonto weSizwe's (MK) members during the apartheid years. MK was the armed wing of the ANC. JZ says that the song is about solidarity and remembering the struggles. His opponents say that calling for machine guns has no relevance in a democratic country, other than to cause violence.

"Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" is the national anthem of South Africa.
3. Jacob Zuma on Marriage and Family: JZ says "I love all my wives and children and I'm proud of them". When he was married on 5 January 2008 how many wives/children did that make?

Answer: 2 wives, 1 ex-wife, 1 late wife, 2 fiancées, 18 children

JZ is a committed polygamist. His first wife, Sizakele Khumalo, (no children), lives at his home-stead. Wife number two, cabinet minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, (4 children), divorced him in 1998. Wife number three, Kate Zuma, (5 children), committed suicide in 2000. Wife number four, Nompumelelo MaNtuli, (2 children), is his "city-wife". He has paid lobolo for two fiancées, one of which is the mother of two of his children. The balance of his children were born to girlfriends. He is rumored to have more children, but this has not been confirmed.
4. Jacob Zuma on Women and Rape: In December 2005, JZ was charged with rape. He was found not guilty. What was his defense?

Answer: Her style of dress showed she wanted sex, and as a Zulu man he had to satisfy her

Quotes from Zuma's trial:
"She normally came to me wearing pants, but on that day she had on a skirt and she was sitting in a way that was not usual. Under normal circumstances, if a woman is dressed in a skirt, she will sit properly with her legs together. But she [the rape complainant] crossed her legs and wouldn't even mind if the skirt was raised very much," and "I was taught that leaving a woman in that state [sexually aroused] was the worst thing a [Zulu] man can do. She could even have you arrested and charged with rape."

These statements angered many women's rights groups. During the trial, JZ's supporters would rally in front of the court, calling for the death of the complainant.

5. Jacob Zuma on HIV and AIDS: JZ knew beforehand that the rape complainant was HIV positive. How did he protect himself from the virus?

Answer: He had a shower after sex

Yes - he took a shower, claiming that it would minimize the risk of getting HIV. The irony is that in his election speech, he called for AIDS to be treated as a national emergency. He was also the head of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on AIDS, before his dismissal from his post as deputy president.
6. Jacob Zuma on Financial Advisors: JZ's financial advisor, Shabir Shaik, was convicted for fraud and corruption, in June 2005, and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Which of the following did Shabir NOT do for JZ?

Answer: Signed as guarantor for JZ's bank bond, and contributed to repayments

It was noted in the court case that JZ was unaware of the bribery negotiations.
Vivien Reddy, a Durban businessman, signed as guarantor for a bond taken out by JZ, and undertook to make the payments for the first 12 months.

Judge Hilary Squires found that Shabir Shaik's actions were to advance his business interests, through his relationship with JZ.
7. Jacob Zuma on Corruption: Late December 2007, the Scorpions, (an agency that investigates and prosecutes organized crime and corruption in South Africa), issued an indictment to JZ. What are the charges?

Answer: All of the choices

This is not the first time that JZ has been in the firing lines for corruption. In 2001, the National Director of Prosecutions held an investigation against JZ and Tony Yengeni for the misuse of power. Charges against JZ were dropped, and Tony Yengeni was found guilty of corruption. In 2005, after the Shabir Shaik trial, JZ was reinvestigated. However, as the prosecution did not have sufficient evidence at the time, the case was struck from the roll.
8. Jacob Zuma on Education: JZ believes in making education more accessible to all. He is the patron for a bursary fund, which has assisted over 1000 primary school pupils, and a few are tertiary education level. What level of education did JZ attain?

Answer: No formal schooling

JZ's father died when he was young, and his mother worked as a domestic servant. He did not attend school.

This has probably made him more determined to ensure education is accessible for all children, and his policies focus on education and adult literacy. He is the patron of the KZN Reconstruction and Development Bursary fund. Each cabinet member in KwaZulu-Natal was provided with funds for a project of their choice. He chose his allocation to educate poor people in rural areas.
9. Jacob Zuma on Apologies: JZ knows the power of apology. One thing he had to apologize for, was having unprotected sex with a HIV positive woman. In September 2006, he made a comment about a sector of the population that the later had to apologize for later. So what was the offending statement?

Answer: His remark that "same sex marriages is a disgrace to the nation and to God"

Besides the above remark, JZ followed up by saying "When I was growing up, unqingili ['homosexuals' in the Zulu language] could not stand in front of me. I would knock him out. " Two days later he issued an apology, stating that he apologizes unreservedly, and that he did not intend to have his statement interpreted as a condemnation of gays and lesbians. He acknowledged their protection under the constitution, and their contribution to freedom in South Africa.

JZ often changes his mind on Zimbabwe.

The comment about whingers leaving the country was made by the Minister of Safety and Security, Charles Nqakula.
10. Jacob Zuma on a Sense of Humour: Politicians provide most of the fodder for cartoonist and satirists, and JZ probably provides more than a fair share. So what is JZ's general reaction to these cartoons and satirical spoofs?

Answer: I'll sue you for damaging my reputation

In June 2006, JZ filed defamation lawsuits against six newspapers and a radio station. Three of the claims, totaling R 15 million, were against the cartoonist Zapiro, a well known South African satirist. The one claim against the radio station was for their spoof of the rape trial.

Zapiro's response was to draw another cartoon, showing an angry Zuma demanding R15m from Zapiro and shouting: "I'm suing for damage to my reputation!" Zapiro looks bored, and replies "Would that be your reputation as a disgraced, chauvinistic demagogue who can't control his sexual urges and who thinks a shower prevents AIDS?".
