Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Lal Qila is located in Delhi. If Qila means fort, what colour does the word 'lal' indicate?

Answer: Red

The 'Lal Qila' is also known as the 'Red Fort' which is a literal translation into English. The fort gets its name from the red coloured sandstone used in its construction. It was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, more famous for building the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife, Mumtaz. Since India's independence in 1947, every year on the 15th of August, the Indian Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort and delivers a speech.
2. The "Buland Darwaza" was built by Akbar to commemorate one of his victories. What does 'darwaza' mean?

Answer: Door

"Buland Darwaza" means the "Door of Victory". It is considered to be the largest such structure in the world. Located at Fatehpur Sikri, a purpose built capital city of Emperor Akbar, it stands at the entrance to the Jama Masjid. The doorway is inscribed with verses from the Quran.
3. Famous as a symbol of the city of Jaipur, what does "Hawa Mahal" mean?

Answer: Palace of Winds

'Mahal' means palace while 'hawa' means wind. The structure was so named due to the many tiny windows (called 'jharokas'). Traditionally, in Jaipur, and the entire state of Rajasthan, women did not show their faces to men they were not related to. They covered their faces with the ends of their saris or with a separate piece of cloth called a 'ghoonghat'.

The Hawa Mahal was especially constructed with many small windows to allow the royal women to watch the parades and processions from within the building, without outsiders being able to see them.
4. This structure is known as "Jal Mahal". What does 'jal' mean?

Answer: Water

"Jal Mahal" translates to "Water Palace" in English. As can be deduced from the photograph, it was named after its location in the middle of a lake. The palace is found in Jaipur and was built in typical Rajput style of architecture. This is not the only such palace of the state.

The city of Udaipur is home to the Lake Palace, a former palace now turned into a luxury hotel, which is also built in the middle of a lake.
5. The Jama Masjid of Delhi is the largest of its kind in India. What kind of place of worship does the word 'masjid' indicate?

Answer: Mosque

Masjid is the Hindi and Urdu word for mosque. Jama Masjid literally means 'Friday mosque' with Friday being the day of prayer in Islam. The formal name of the mosque is Masjid-i Jehan Numa. This is again one of the many structures commissioned by Shah Jahan during his rule. Like with other structures built by him, the Jama Masjid is also constructed mainly out of sandstone with marble used decoratively.
6. The picture shows Lucknow's famous Bara Imambara. What does 'bara' mean?

Answer: Big

'Bara' means big or grand. An imambara is a large hall used by the Shi'ite Muslims for gatherings. The Bara Imambara complex also includes the Asfi Mosque. The complex was built in the late 18th century by the Nawab of Awadh. Awadh was a formerly princely kingdom in northern India. Another popular attraction within the complex is a Bhul-bhulaiya or maze.
7. Originally built as a residence for the Viceroy, the Rashtrapati Bhavan is now home to which other dignitary as given away by the name?

Answer: President of India

"Rashtrapati" means "President" in Hindi while "Bhavan" means "house". Thus, this is the residence of the President of India. When the British decided to move the capital from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi, it was decided that a palace would be constructed as the residence for the Indian Viceroy.

After India became an independent country and in 1950 declared itself a republic, this place was designated as the President's official residence. Rashtrapati Bhavan and a number of other surrounding buildings, including the residences of various cabinet ministers, are often referred to as Lutyens' Delhi after the British architect Edwin Landseer Lutyens who designed these buildings.
8. Kumbalgarh is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Rajasthan. Does the word 'garh' in its name mean 'road'?

Answer: No

'Garh' means 'fort' or 'citadel'. Located in the Aravalli mountain range, the fort is named after Rana Khumba, a king during whose reign it was built. It is considered one of the largest fort complexes in the world. There are over 300 temples within the fort complex and numerous residential buildings.
9. Agrasen ki Baoli is found in Delhi. What kind of structure does 'baoli' indicate?

Answer: Stepwell

'Baoli' is the Hindi word for stepwell. Stepwells were common in many parts of north and west India in earlier times. They helped to conserve water during the dry months. The Agrasen Baoli is believed to date back to the 14th century. Agrasen refers to a king of the same name during whose reign it may have been built.

It has three levels allowing people to be able to reach water even in droughts. Given its historical importance, it was designated as a Protected Monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
10. The "Charminar" is famous as a symbol of Hyderabad. If 'minar' stands for the minarets, how many does the word 'char' indicate?

Answer: Four

'Char' means four in Hindi with 'charminar' meaning 'four minarets'. The structure is so strongly associated with Hyderabad that it was also incorporated into the state emblem of the state of Telangana. Constructed in the late 16th century, the structure includes a mosque. It was built by the Qutb Shahi Dynasty when the capital of the empire was moved from nearby Golkonda to Hyderabad.
