Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Let's turn to the right, boys!" This exortation from the driller means what?

Answer: Let's start drilling

The drill pipe is turned through the rotary table and turns in a clockwise fashion "to the right". A gate valve is opened by turning to the left and square dancing is not practiced on drilling rigs.
2. This material can be either native or custom blended and is circulated down the drill pipe, through the bit and back out the wellbore. What is it called?

Answer: Mud

Native mud is made with just the addition of water and is mixed by the action of the bit as it descends through the layers of the earth. Engineered mud additives may include barite, polymers, etc.
3. Which of the following answers is not a function of drilling mud?

Answer: Slows the rate of penetration so the bit doesn't cut too fast

Drilling mud is used to cool and lubricate the drill bit. Different amounts of "solids" are added to weight the mud so that it will be sufficiently heavy to control downhole pressure.

The viscosity of mud is adjusted to carry cuttings from the bottom of the well up to the mud pit.
4. The viscosity of drilling mud is measured by timing the rate at which it runs out of a funnel. What is the name of this funnel?

Answer: Marsh Funnel

Water has a "funnel time" of less than 30 seconds/quart. Mud, polymers and oil may have funnel times ranging up to three minutes or more. The longer the funnel time, the more viscous the fluid.
5. The first true, offshore, over water oilwell, not accessed by a pier, was drilled in what State?

Answer: Louisiana

The first over water oil well was drilled in the Caddo Pine Island Field in northwest Louisiana by Gulf Oil in Caddo Lake, then known as Ferry Lake. The Ferry Lake #1 was drilled in 1911.
6. Of the following, which is generally regarded as the greatest enemy of oilfield operations over time?

Answer: Corrosion

The phrase, "rust never sleeps" was coined for a reason!
7. Marginal wells, classified as producing fewer than 10 barrels per day, provide about 40% of the oil produced in the United States. What other name is given to these wells?

Answer: Stripper Wells

Stripper wells represent a huge resource. Most of these wells are in fields which are starving for appropriate technology and still have, on average, approximately 66% of their original oil remaining in the reservoir.
8. If you are on a drilling location and are "in the doghouse", where are you?

Answer: In a small building just off the rig floor

A metal building usually housing the drilling rate indicator and a small work desk and lockers for the rig hands, the dog house also serves as a shelter from some of the elements.
9. At the time of its discovery in 1948, this Saudi Arabian oilfield (also called the "King of Kings") was the largest in the world. What is its name?

Answer: Ghawar

Throughout the second half of the twentieth century, Ghawar remained the largest oilfield ever found, out of 40,000+ fields discovered. Noted for its excellent permeability and high quality, light sweet oil, it has been a mainstay of Saudi production for decades.

Burgan is in Kuwait and was set afire by Saddam Hussein's troops.

Cantarell is off the eastern coast of central Mexico at the site of an ancient meteorite crater.

Tupi is a recent very deep water find off of Coastal Brazil.
10. The revolutionary BlackStorm oil production system for shallow oil wells uses a corrosion-proof flexible hose, has one moving part, requires no workover rig and saves 99% of the labor cost associated with pump jacks. Who invented this system in 2007?

Answer: Jay Reynolds

Reynolds is a small oil producer totally devoted to changing the operating economics of the stripper well market. The other three names are fictional.
