Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two philosophers developed the principal concept of Marxism?

Answer: Marx and Engels

Marxism refers to the theory created by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.
2. What word did Marx label the Ruling Class with?

Answer: Bourgeoisie

The Bourgeoisie "own the means of production" and use the worker, paying them extremely low wages, thus exploiting the worker. The bourgeoisie can be further divided into the wealthy bourgeoisie and the 'petit bourgeoisie'.
3. If the "ruling class" were called the bourgeoisie, what were the workers named by Marx?

Answer: Proletariat

The proletariat were the workers who sold their labour for a low price and did not own the means of production. According to Marx, the capitalist mode of production establishes the conditions that allow the bourgeoisie to exploit the proletariat because the merchandise is of higher value than the workers' wages.
4. There are two different branches of Marxism, Humanist and Structural. Did Structural Marxism come before Humanist Marxism?

Answer: No

Humanist Marxism was the first idea thought of by Marx regarding the exploitation of the working classes, Humanist Marxism focuses on Moral Leaders being able to guide the proletariat into realising that they were being exploited and this would then lead to a non violent uprising, however when Marx realised that this wasn't going to happen, he changed his thoughts and came up with the later version called 'structural Marxism'.
5. If Humanist Marxism is where moral leaders will help the workers break free from exploitation, what do you think Marx thought would happen in his Structural Marxism theory?

Answer: The workers would keep being exploited until they could no longer cope and a violent revolution would occur.

After being disappointed that his ideas of Moral Leaders didn't go to plan, Marx, being older and more cynical, came up with structural Marxism.
6. Which 1960s-70s philosopher believed in the Structural Marxism theory?

Answer: Louis Althusser

Althusser was a member and sometimes critic of the FCP (French Communist Party). He focuses on the influence of empiricism (knowledge through the senses) on Marxist theory, and humanist and reformist socialist orientations but also the problem of the 'cult of personality' and ideology itself.
7. Karl Marx and Friedrich Nietzsche shared similar views on society.

Answer: False

Marx formalised communism, while Nietzsche's views influenced fascism. While diametrically opposed philosophically, political regimes based on them both rely on similarly oppressive methods to enforce them.
8. Which country was the first to adopt Communism as its political blueprint? (and what year did this happen?)

Answer: Russia 1917

The Bolsheviks overthrew Tsar Nicholas II in 1917 and Russia became known as the USSR. Lenin became the first communist ruler of Russia after murdering the remaining Romanov family (Russia's Royal Family).
9. Karl believed Russia would be the last country to turn Communist, stating that it was too backward. However, which country did Marx believe would be the first to adopt Communism?

Answer: Great Britain

Marx actually believed that Great Britain would be the first to adopt his communist ideas and thought that Russia was too backward to do this... It's a good job that he wasn't alive during 1917 when his thoughts were proven to be completely the wrong way round.
10. What was the name of the small pamphlet-like book written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels outlining all of the ideas of communism?

Answer: The Communist Manifesto

Marx and Engels wrote this book together in London, and it was first published on February 21st 1848.
